From Women’s Institute- Theresa Broeders: Some history: S.S.#5[Hinkley or Horne School] Hinkley Point or Hornes Point Early settlers came from the U.S. after the war of 1812-15 and settled on the South shore. Soon they needed a school. Mr. Hinkley granted a piece of land where now there is a cemetery[Point Alexandria] This first school was built of logs and opened in the early 1820's. The first teacher was Olivia Hinkley. There were few books and the children used slates. (From the opening to Darrell Horne passing entrance in 1925 either the teacher or pupils were related to Miss Olivia Hinkley.) A fire destroyed this school and a frame one was built across the road also on Hinkley property. It had one room , blackboard on the west wall and windows on the North and south. Heating cost were to high so a partition was installed dividing it into porch and classroom. With two windows now in the porch the lighting was poor so the blackboard was moved against the north wall and two windows put in the west side. At first they only had school in the summer months and the children went o S.S.#3 school in the winter. Later they didn't go to school in the winter. In 1895-97 Miss Nellie Grant taught but when she married Thomas Muckian the law stated a married women could not teach. When Miss Olivia Horne taught here a unique record was set in that all the pupils and Miss Horne had the same great- grandmother. Salaries ranged from a few dollars to $900. In the depression years it was reduced to $500. It closed in 1939 at the advice of the Inspector F.P.Smith[small attendance] The pupils Shirley and Ronald Stevenson were taken to the Ridge School[#3]. Teachers:First teacher was Olivia Hinckley, daughter of Samuel Hinckley on whose land the school was built.Miss Hinckley was followed by; Laura Murells, John Smeaton, between 1915 & 1923 sisters Angeline, Oliva and Frances Horne.
