Closed: ? At present: Still standing?? OLD SURVEY SCHOOL Built: 1840 Location: con.3 lot 24 Closed: ? At present: Still standing?? Note in 1878 tenants map school on Con III Lot 24 OS, land owned by Wm Staley. Letter in regards to differences in schools in School Section No. 2 --1851 S.S. # 2 Annual reports 1850-1869 -Uncertain for which school these reports are for. The reports note the school built 1844/5 and then a new one built in 1853. Only one school mentioned after 1850- so the above problem in the Letter (above) must have been resolved and only one school kept. Front SchoolThe front school was originally a common school and later became a separate school. This is for the Front School that started as a Common School and later (date?) became a Separate School: From Theresa Broeders- information from Wolfe Island Women’s institute records S.S.#2 was built in 1850 with the land donated Simcoe island children were rowed over in the summer each family taking turns. In 1880 one boy drowned crossing the ice to school. (Lois and Sid Eves of Simcoe Island today and they said the boy who was drowned in 1880 crossing the ice to school[S.S.#2] on Wolfe Island was Russell Busch and that their was a family who built their own school before #1 [maybe that's why there's a cross on Simcoe in that map of 1860?] This family had 150 milking cows and there was a cheese factory near by too. That school was on lot 8 on the North side) attendance was 60 pupils that year. NOTE March 2006:From Rodney Busch: "Russell Busch was my grandfather, Vernal's, brother and I remember him talking to me about his death. Russell did die by drowning, but he was born October 25, 1891 (chr Jan 24, 1892) and died March 1, 1906." my note: perhaps it was a different boy who drowned and names were mixed up.. or of course perhaps dates were just confused. -seats were around the walls as well as 4 rows 1882 S.S.#1 built on Simcoe Island - safer and better for those pupils 1900 an addition was built 10 ft. added, new floor and platform,2 new windows and outside walls clap boarded. 1913 24 new desks with lift covers were installed 1928 walls ,ceiling repainted and inside redecorated.
