Escorted to Hospital:
Strenuous Reviving Attempt Brings 2nd Man Near Death
Howe Island (Staff)—Accidentally scraping a high tension wire carrying 4,800 volts, while raising a 20-foot length of steel pipe form his well through a hole in the roof of his pumphouse, Elmer Walker, 49-yearold dairy farmer, and native of Howe Island, was electrocuted here early yesterday afternoon.
A hired man, Kip Vinkle, 42, who also had hold of the pipe at the time, but who was wearing leather mitts over woollen gloves, was thrown through the doorway of the pumphouse by the heavy surge of current. He suffered a slight burn to his right hand.
Surviving Mr.Walker besides his wife, the former Kathleen Clay, are four children, Mrs. Thomas Lloyd (Marilyn) of Kingston; Sandra, 14; Diane, 9; and David, 7 years old. Also living on the family farm on the south range, is the dead man’s aged mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Walker, who has passed her 90th year.
Two gangs of hydro workers on the mainland rushed by separate ferries to the scene when an emergency call for resuscitators was sent out by meantime Dr. Kenneth Gray, of Gananoque, had arrived and pronounced the man dead. Coroner Dr. P.M. Macdonnell, of Kingston, said there will be no inquest.
The latter said a third man, who was near the scene at the time of the fatality, had a narrow escape from death when he lapsed into unconsciousness after applying artificial respiration for along period to the stricken farmer.
John Houston, 32, of Toronto, who was working on the exterior of the Walker house, worked over the electrically- shocked victim until he, himself, collapsed. This situation came about when Houston, a former deep-sea diver who had suffered a chest injury during his diving days, suddenly lost the use of his windpipe yesterday.
He was treated at the scene by Dr. Gray, before being taken to the rectory of St. Philomena’s Church where the parish priest Rev. J.P. Ainslie, attempted to make the man more comfortable.
When Houston continued to show signs of stress and had great difficulty breathing, the priest accompanied by Dr. Macdonnell, raced through traffic on Highway 2 under the escort of cruisers from the Kingston detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, under Const. Ernie Jacobs to Hotel Dieu Hospital.
A LaSalle ambulance met the speeding car at Eastview, and passed an oxygen tank to the Kingston doctor who was having trouble getting sufficient air into the former diver’s lungs.
Dr. Macdonnell told The Whig Standard last night that “much credit must be given to Father Ainslie in saving Houston’s life,” for the manner in which he handled the emergency which came as an aftermath to the electrocution. The near-victim of suffocation is reported to be progressing favorably today.
Mr. Walker is resting at the Wilfred J. Franke Funeral Home, Kingston, until burial service tomorrow with Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Philomena’s Church, Howe Island. Rev. J.P. Ainslie will officiate.
