THE ISLANDS NEWSLETTER

March 14, 2005What's new at The Islands website!
Greeting from the Webmaster
Hello everyone!

I hope everyone is beginning to enjoy the possibility of spring! We're finally having some warmer weather here, but still lots of snow on the ground! Many thanks to Peter Rogers and Dean Snider for helping me keep up to speed by transcribing a number of the scanned images you're sending in.
I am almost caught up with obits and articles.
Many thanks as well to AM Benson for continually sending in notices of marriage and deaths, and articles from old Kingston Whig issues. A Few Notes...

Please Support This Site!

Please help support this site! This site grows by the kind submissions of researchers and those interested in preserving their history. Please send in scans of old photos and documents, transcriptions of certificates, obituaries, bibles etc. There is a spot for EVERYTHING on this site, and if there isn't I will make one. Please contact me if you don't have a scanner and would like to mail COPIES of photos or documents for me to scan and/or transcribe. (They will not be returned and you must cover postage costs)
Please help out by sending in anything island related, even if it isn't for your family! Mystery photos are most welcome! Please email me if you would like to help the site grow! Credit will be given to the submitter.

BIOGRAPHIES

The Biographies section of the site is a great place where you can see family information all together. The Islands site is mostly divided by source type; registrations, articles etc.
Anyone may submit a biography- a write up on a person or a family group. One family group (parents and children) per biography please, or you can just submit an individual. Submit as many biographies as you like! There is no limit to text submitted. No more than 4 photos for each biography please.
(Other photos can be submitted to the Island Photos pages though!)
Please email me if you've any questions.
If you know of a biography not listed that is on a different site please email me the details and the url and I will add a link.
Working Together
The Islands site is built and grows through the efforts of those who use it. I do what I can to add new information, but I am only one person. Please consider submitting information, photos or anything else you have to add to this site. Credit will be given to the submitter.
Submissions are greatly needed for Amherst Island. Surf the pages to see what IS there.

EMAIL ME

If you would like to post anything to this newsletter please email me about it. I'd be happy to put little blurbs- either about family or if you would like to discuss an island topic or recount some island memories.

EVERYONE! Please don't forget to put the word 'ISLAND' somewhere in your subject line when you email me! I know I'm missing some of your emails because there is no subject line, or it is 'hi' or something similar and I delete it. I get A LOT of spam and don't take the time to check every email- I look at my subject lines. Thank you.

BRICKWALL

What happened to Bridget Clarke Beseau? She was known by several names, such as Gertrude, Kathleen, Bridget, and Catherine, Does anyone know anything about her? She had a child before she married John Michael Beseau. After having her second child James Beseau, she left the two children with the Priest, and then disappeared. I was told she died young and my grandfather John Clarke skated from Howe Island to Clayton and caught a bus to Watertown for her funeral. My father used to visit his sister's grave in Watertown cemetery on his way to Syracuse NY, but no one else knows, where this grave is located! Has anyone one heard any stories about Bridget? Please email if you have any. Thank You.
If you have any information please EMAIL EILEEN

What is THE WRITTEN WORD button on the side bar???

This section of the site is devoted to... things written!
It includes sections for Diaries, Letters, Papers, Stories/Memories, Pamphlets/Brochures/Programs etc, Poetry and Song Lyrics as well as ONLINE books and Articles.

The Articles section is as it sounds, transcribed or images of newspaper articles relating to the islands. (See other sections for Obits, death notices, birth, marriage and anniversary annoucements).
The Articles section has recently been revamped and organized by century and then year. You can use the search engine for these pages!!
Be sure to check out articles listed as news or gossip-they contain a great wealth of helpful information!

Our earliest article:
Kingston Chronicle & Gazette
September 14, 1833
Population:
Wolfe Island 1832= 611, 1833= 656
Amherst Is. 1832= 512, 1833= 605

An Interesting article...
The Times
Feb 05, 1863; pg. 6;
Outrage on Canadian Territory.
-- The Kingston News states that, on the night of the 8th of January, Lieutenant Haddock, of the Federal army, with two soldiers, landed on Wolfe Island, broke into a house there, and forcibly seized a deserter who had been living in the house for two months, handcuffed him, took him to a boat, and rowed off with him. Another boat with more men was in waiting, ready to give aid if the first party had met with serious resistance. These invasions occur frequently; if made know, and duly represented to the Federal Fovernment, apology and restitution follow; but the continual recurrance of the offence is calculated to disturb the harmony of the frontier.

If you've any newspaper articles to submit please email me the text or an image. Please include paper name and date if known.
