THE ISLANDS NEWSLETTER

May 2006 NewsletterWhat's new at The Islands website!
Greeting from the Webmaster
Hello everyone!

Wow the May newsletter is on time!
Quite a few submissions this month, I'm still behind but am working to get them up as quickly as possible. June is a very busy month for me, lots of birthdays etc, but do keep sending your submissions and I'll get them up as soon as possible!!

A Few Notes...

1851 census images now online!!

I've recieved a few emails with links to the new online 1851 census images... so here it is for those who haven't heard yet!
1851 census images

Census of 1851 (Canada East, Canada West, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia)
At this point there is no name or street index. However, the images I looked at were excellent, much better than the microfilm.
Toronto researchers should be aware that the returns for Scarborough and the City of Toronto (1851 boundaries) have been lost, but if they are looking for a family that lived north of Bloor Street, or east of the Don River, or west of about Dufferin Street, they should be able to find them in York Township.
All researchers should be aware that the census was taken in January of 1852, although it is often referred to as the 1851 census.

Search

Please don't forget that you can search THIS SITE using the Freefind search engine at the top left. Unfortunetly there is no soundex search so be sure to try various name spellings. The transcriptions on this site are as accurate as possible in spelling, and we all know how terrible some of our ancestors, and those who wrote down records, were in the past! Best of luck!

Volunteer:

New submissions to the site are always welcome! Even if it is just ONE obit we don't have! Please contact me for submission details. If you would like to transcribe any of the 1911 census in full for the site please let me know. Automated genealogy is only transcribing select headings.

Still looking...
I'm looking for someone to complete the Wolfe Island 1861 census. Chris Morrell (who passed away suddenly in march) had completed and submited Ward 1. It is on the site. If you would be interested in finishing the census please contact me.

This site now has over 867 pages up from 858 pages in feb.
This Newsletter has 158 subscribers, up from 144 in July.

If you would like to submit a "BRICK WALL" problem to the newsletter please email me with "Newsletter Brick Wall" in the subject line.

Submissions are greatly needed for Amherst Island. Surf the pages to see what IS there.

BRICKWALL

Please email me with your Brick Wall questions!!

can you help? Email me!
From Cliff Huber
"My brick wall relates to the 'disappearance' of a Woodside ancestor who died on Amherst Island c1826. No record seems to be extant of where he is buried or just what happened.
Some of his children, who were of majority age when the family left Derry Island, are known as the Woodsides of Bruce County, and later of Port Arthur ON. For a few years, the family farmed in Manvers Township of Durham, south of Owen Sound.
A daughter, Mary Anne Woodside, married one of Isaac and Sarah Preston's sons, Isaac Jr. who grew up on Amherst Island at the homes now called Poplar Dell, a B & B run by the Caugheys. In 1839, Isaac Jr. and Mary Anne moved to Manvers Township where some of his brothers were living.
I have checked the cemetery records of Amherst Island with no luck."
