THE ISLANDS NEWSLETTER

November 30, 2005What's new at The Islands website!
Greeting from the Webmaster
Hello everyone!

The past month has not been a great one for the site, with the rootsweb freepages server crashing at the end of October. Luckily they were able to retrieve info back to Oct 7th, so I didn't have that much to upload (I do save the whole site on my computer as well)
However these problems both slowed down myself putting up new information, and people submitting as well. (By the way... thank you for all of those who emailed me during the time the site was down.. and when it came back up again!)
This month has also been busy for me personally, with a number of birthdays, baby showers etc, so not as much into has been put on the page. December will likely be as busy, but I hope to be more organized so do keep the submissions coming!!

A Few Notes...

NEW EMAIL

Please note that TheIslands@keepconnected.com email account closed in november. Please use the NEW email address TheIslandsWeb@hotmail.com one good thing is that is has 25MB of space so you can submit more without my mailbox filling up!

Search

Please don't forget that you can search THIS SITE using the Freefind search engine at the top left. Unfortunetly there is no soundex search so be sure to try various name spellings. The transcriptions on this site are as accurate as possible in spelling, and we all know how terrible some of our ancestors, and those who wrote down records, were in the past! Best of luck!

Volunteer:

If you would like to transcribe any of the 1911 census in full for the site please let me know. Automated genealogy is only transcribing select headings.

Focus On...

The Holiday Season

Well it's that time of year again! The time of giving and receiving and being with those you love the most (hopefully!)
I hope you all remember to take the time to visit or call those older relatives still living, grandparents, great grandparents, Aunts and Uncles and great aunts and uncles too! The wonderful thing about the majority of our older family members is that they like to talk about the 'old days' and show photos and other memorbilia (unless you get that exception-the aunt who hides everything and won't open her door or answer your calls!)
Should you make a visit be sure to bring a copy of some of your info, even print out a basic tree for the family that applies. Leave this with your relative, they'll be glad you thought of them and will probably look at it more than you think. Be sure to put your name, phone number, email and snail mail address on it as well, so they will remember where they got it and can contact you easily, or if they make a copy to give someone else, that person can get in touch with you.
All and all, I hope you all have a great holiday season and hope a few loose ends appear in your stocking!

Working Together
The Islands site is built and grows through the efforts of those who use it. I do what I can to add new information, but I am only one person. Please consider submitting information, photos or anything else you have to add to this site. Credit will be given to the submitter.
Submissions are greatly needed for Amherst Island. Surf the pages to see what IS there.

Visiting an Island this Winter?
Be sure to take your camera and snap photos of any old buildings (schools, churches, barns, houses etc) to send to the site. I'm also looking for tombstone photos and transcriptions for Amherst Island-check out the site to see what is there.
If visiting relatives make copies of any interesting documents, everything is welcome on the site-please remember we are trying to document, save and preserve the genealogy and history of the islands. Thanks to all for their help!!

Check this out! OFFSITE!!Digital Kingston "..we have digitized the KFPL’s newspaper
index to the Whig and its predecessors from 1810-1848."

BEEN TO THE SCHOOLS SECTION OF THE SITE?

Check it out!
The schools section of the site is divided up by Island. Once to an island section, it is again either divided up by specific school, or in the case of wolfe island, first by Public school or Seperate School and then by individual school.
There is a lot of great info here, including memories, lists of caretakers, historys, photos of schools and class photos, annual reports and more!
Some schools have little info, for these or even the ones that seem to have a full page, if there is anything you can provide, even a name of a teacher, please email me the island name, school name and your info!
A number of schools I would really like to get photos of, please help if you can! See the main Islands page for a list of schools with no photos of that school.
Thanks so much and enjoy!!
