OF 1837-38

SUPPLEMENTARY LIST

The British Whig, of Kingston, in seconding Mr. Merrill’s efforts, feels that the foregoing list inadequately fills the roll of the gallant men who shouldered arms at a critical period of Canada’s history. But unhappily no list has been preserved in official quarters (or if retained is not accessible) of the volunteers of 1837, ’38 and ’39, and so names have had to be procured by asking for them through the newspapers. All the veterans have not yet responded; even while this little book has been in the printer’s hands the subjoined additional names have been received. It is a trifling little work, but it contains all the names at the command of willing and enthusiastic friends of the volunteers, and it is the first list ever presented to the public of these men whose valour did credit to Canada. The list will forthwith be presented to Parliament, along with a memorial for recognition by the government of the serving of those who responded to their country’s call. Further, without this list many of these names of gallant Canadians would have gone down to oblivion unrecognized; now their families are at least able to preserve a record of their service.
