David MONTONNA and his son William MONTONNA

Sentinels in the StreamóLighthouses of the St. Lawrence River, Fischer & Bouchard.

David MONTONNA Supervised installation of a steam diaphone foghorn.

William MONTONNA retired as keeper in 1937.

Together, the father and son manned the light for 50 years.

Succeeded the MONTONNA family but not for long.

1938

Edward SWEET

Sentinels in the StreamóLighthouses of the St. Lawrence River, Fischer & Bouchard.

Sweet was the last civilian keeper. After that the US Coast Guard took over operation of the light.† He retired in 1938.

1939--1981

US COAST GUARD--Ruben HOWARD, first Coast Guard Keeper

 

Rueben Howard was the first Coast Guard to keep the light.† The US Coast Guard manned the light for 42 years before the light was automated.† Now the light is serviced by the Coast Guard staff in Oswego, NY.† In 1981, the living quarters were closed when the light was automated.† The light is now serviced by Coast Guard staff stationed at Oswego, NY.†

 

In the summers for a few months every year, the living quarters are opened up as a youth hostel.
