James Kirkpatrick b 12 Jul 1820, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Ireland, came
to the Islands as a young man to work as a farm hand. Various censuses show
him as living on Wolfe and Main Duck Islands, and the County Atlas project
from McGill University lists him with Wolfe Island land Concession III, Lot
1.
On 20 May 1840, he married a local girl, Julia Emily Brown b 23 Aug 1821. In
addition to whatever other crops they may have been producing, they produced
a bumper crop of 10 healthy children. In the photo they are, from the back
reading left to right: William b 23 July 1849; Sarah H. b 30 Dec 1856; Julia
Emily b 6 Aug 1854; Catherine J. "Kate" b 9 Jan 1852; Mary A. b 18 Apr 1847;
(second row) John b 18 May 1841; Margaret b 24 Feb 1845; mother Julia; father
James; (standing) Michael b 14 Feb 1843'; (seated in front) Victoria C. b 31
Aug 1857; James b 14 July 1863.
John m Malinda Dunbar 28 Oct 1873; Michael had already married her sister,
Catharine "Kaye" Dunbar 11 Feb 1869. They were the daughters of James and
Catharine Dunbar from Kingston City. Margaret m George N. McPherson of Cape
Vincent, NY 23 Apr 1872. According to Chris Morrell, Kate's marriage in 1874
is mentioned in Robertson's book, "Landmarks of Toronto" -- and I would love
to see that source! In 1889, James m Janet McIlquham, a daughter of Alexander
McIlquham whose family still lives in the Kingston area in 2001. They had
three children, and emigrated to the United States in about 1903, living
ultimately in Cincinnati, Ohio, where James died in 1917 (?), and Janet in
1940.
My informant was James and Janet's daughter, Marion, who died in Cincinnati
in late 1984.
I would be thrilled to hear from anyone who has questions or knows anything
else at all about this branch of my family.
