Howe Island Old Houses

Thanks again to Anne Walkey for showing me these houses
and a bit about them.

Here are a few of the remaining old farmhouses.
Many on the island have been torn or burnt down.

I can not guarentee that this information is correct about when houses were built or who built and lived in them and when. Below is just what people have told me. If you have any resources, ie land records, that prove someone lived somewhere at a certain time. Please feel free to let me know.

This is the house of Michael J."Johnnie" Pickett b.1898 d.1979, and Mary Elizabeth Leavis b.1906 d.1980. It was moved in 1989/1990 from beside the Frontenac Ferry to a location up the road. This is a pic of when they were moving it. Their son B. Patrick "Paddy" Pickett b.1930 d.1979 lived in a small brick house behind it. He died young.
Thanks to John Foley for the picture.
Note: June 2003 from Janet Heffernan:
Paddy Pickett was my uncle, and he did die young (49 yrs). However, he lived as an adult on Howe Island for a very short time in a small white frame cottage owned by Dick Pickett (his uncle, brother of Johnnie), beside Picketts house but still on the river.

Dick Picketts barn.
Thanks to John Foley for this picture.

Thanks to Marnie for fixing this photo for me!! :)
This is a painting of the original residence of Michael Pickett.

This is the Foley home. Taken by myself.

Lot 10. This house was possibly built in early 1900's. Probably built by Lewis Beaubien, after them the Whites lived here, Matt and Zita Kane lived here in the early 50's and then Bernie Byrnes and wife Betty (n Goodfriend) lived here(though it was owned by John Dowling). The last to live in the house was Joseph Beaubien, Lewis's son. Taken by myself.

West Lot 12. On old Howe Island map, was Robert Simpsons originally. Last family to live there were Goodfriends. Taken by myself.

Built in 1800's, was always Driscoll land. Was Tim Driscolls home on James Driscolls property. Taken by myself.

CLARKE HOMESTEAD
Thanks to EILEEN TRUESDELL for this picture!
"Picture of the back of the house, taken by relative Bert Menard, Kitchener, ON. I would be interested in receiving a picture of the homestead after the clapboards were removed in October 2000."

Info from Eileen: "My great grandfather James Clarke came to Howe Island after 1861. He came from England with the British Army to Howe Island with his wife Bridget Duffy and children James, William. Mary Catherine Clarke, was born in 1853 in Kingston, and another daughter Sarah was born 1857 Quebec. Five other children were born on Howe Island, namely Edward Bartholomew, Anne Matilda, John William, Elizabeth Agnes, and Frances Jane. A log cabin was built on the North Shore Lots 18 & 19. This log cabin has recently been removed from it's original site. It has been torn down and will be rebuilt on the Cassidy place on the Spit Head. I hope it will not be known as the Cassidy homestead, as many Island people know that it was built by the Clarke family back in late 1860's . My grandfather John William Clarke was born there July 4, 1863 and his son my father born there in 1904. "
