The Hoots Family
This web site is dedicated to the memory of Carl Casper Hoots who spent many years researching the Hoots family and wrote "The Descendants of Jacob Hoots."
The Hoots family is unique in that virtually all persons in the United States with the surname Hoots are descended from one man, Jacob Hoots of North Carolina.
It is almost certain that older ancestors of the Hoots line had the surname Huth and immigrated to America from what is now Germany. However, there are alternative possibilities concerning the ancestry of Jacob Hoots. The book "Pennsylvania German Pioneers," by Strassburger and Hinke, records several immigrants to America that could be either Jacob Hoots or his father. Two possible scenarios are presented on this site:
- That Johann Jacob Huth emigrated from what is now Germany, lived in Virginia for several years where his name evolved to Jacob Hutts, and eventually ended up in North Carolina, where his name evolved to Jacob Hoots. While in Virginia he married a woman named Margaret and they started the Hoots family in America. This version is presented in "The Standard Family History."
- That Johann Jacob Huth emigrated with his wife from what is now Germany, went to North Carolina, and had a child there named Jacob Hoots. Jacob married a woman named Margaret and started the Hoots family in America. This version is presented in "An Alternate Family History."
Jacob Hoots and his descendants, down to 100 years ago, are shown in the Rootsweb World Connect Project (click on Rootsweb Family Tree below). There is a Hoots message board at HOOTS-L@rootsweb.com.
The next genealogist in line and author of this website is Rodney Nelson Hoots, Carl's nephew.
