Index to Plaques As an everlasting record I have photographed the memorial plaques in the Honour
Avenues at King's Park, Perth. The first Honour Avenue was devised in Ballarat
Victoria with the planting of an avenue of trees along the Western Highway
in honour of each soldier who died in the district during WW1. The concept
was soon embraced by communities Australia wide and has become a unique part
of our history. Perth has been very fortunate the Highgate Returned Services
League through the Honour Avenue Committee have maintained the plaques along
the avenues and have ensured this uniquely Australian part of our history is
preserved. While a large proportion of these soldiers where born in Western
Australia many came from interstate and were of British origins drawn to Western
Australia during the gold boom. Australia lost 8,000 men at Gallipoli and thousands
more before wars end whose dreams, ambitions and contributions to this young
nation would never be realised.
