Ever since my husband and I can remember, we have always wanted our very own home. Since we were in the United States Air Force we have managed to live all over the world, but never really have our own home to paint, fix or add to.
So when we decided to retire, we knew right away that we would invest in our future and buy a home where Bob grew up as a child. I never knew that we would find something to our likeing so quickly. We found the cutest fixer upper that had the amount of rooms we needed and decided to go for it.
We knew there would be major rennovations needed since the home was built in 1960, but that didn't seem to bother us one bit.
As you can see the windows were the first things to go. What a major difference it made towards the front of the home. It brightened everything up.
We had lived in Okinawa for three years, but never expected to see this in a home. A privacy screen right in the center of the living room. So we took it down and put a an entire wall, with a cathedral entrance into the kitchen/dining area with block windows to open it up alittle bit. As you can see I also have a collection of things from Okinawa that I couldn't resist on buying.
The kitchen is an ongoing project into the millenium. We have managed to buy some new white appliances and we tore out the wall behind the stove; which was once a counter top stove from 1960. I'm sure it was cool for it's day, but deffinetly needed to be replaced. Notice the beautiful grout work I did with the tile!
My favorite photo. This is really hard to explain. In this house we had two bathrooms connected in the center was the shower/tub. Figure that one out. The contractors called them Jack and Jill bathrooms back then. The entire wall had to go. Notice me with the sawzaw. That was fun. Pulling all the drywall out was not fun. We ended up putting in two separate bathrooms that did not connect in the middle. Now we have peace and quiet and don't have the children telling us they had to go. Do you know what that's like?
Since we gutted the entire wall, we had to put one up. What a major difference, now everyone loves to come to our house, just to go to the guest bathroom. The flooring was replaced since this photo has been taken, with a white vinyl tile with a Persian blue diamond in the middle. We went for the Victorian Old World theme, notice the pedestal sink. Remember those hot and cold water handles on the faucet? The other side is still work in progress. New floor tile, new mosiac tile surrounding the shower wall with a new cabinet with sink
The flooring used to be that old commercial grade brown and rust tile. How I hate that floor. So of course I had to replace that as well. This is also an on going project into the hallway. Now I have a beautiful Malibu slate vinyl tile which is easy to clean.
Bob is so handy when it comes to carpentry. He never knew he had it in him, but then; I found out that he took shop class in High School, so I put him to work. We used to have a bifold closet in the hallway, now I have a fantastic pantry to store all my non-perishables in. What a guy. I have a honey do list that never seems to end.
Yes, it never seems to end, but at least it's our Home Sweet Home. No more white washed walls that we used to have in the military houseing. Like I said, it's a never ending project being home owners. But, it's the best investment besides your family that a person can make.
