FREE ONLINE BIRTH INDEXES AND RECORDS FOR ITALY
This page is a partial listing of free online resources for finding birth and baptism records for Italy. Some of these databases are transcriptions by private individuals who have placed the information on their own free webpages. But most of the resources listed below are Mormon (LDS) Family History webpages which, allow visitors to view and download registration records or certificates for free. If the records themselves are not online, you will need to order copies of birth registrations from the government records offices, or inexpensive photocopies from the Mormons if the records have been filmed by them, but not yet placed online.
Many genealogy societies as well as governments and other organizations and groups are in the process of digitizing vital records, and their online databases are incomplete. That is because, rather than wait until all records have been indexed, they put the records indexed thus far online. So if you do not find what you want to find at a particular site, do check back periodically to see if the records you are interested in have been added to the database.
Orders of records from private genealogy and vital records services usually cost significantly more money than the government as they charge additional processing fees. So, if you need official copies of birth records, be sure to order them direct from the local records offices. For more helpful information about doing this, see David Zerga's example letters to send to Italy as well as the introductory sites shown below on this page in the section about basic Italian genealogy.
Some of the websites shown below also allow you to search for marriages and deaths as well, but this page will only discuss birth indices, birth certificates, and baptismal records.

If you need assistance understanding the records in Latin or Italian, there are many webpages devoted to terms used in Italian genealogical documents. However, they may not have all the terms you will need to know, so make sure you take advantage of translation engines such as Babelfish and Google for definitions of those words. We also strongly recommend that you join one or more forums or mailing lists for the area or areas of Italy where your ancestors came from, or a general Italian mailing list. Even if you choose to lurk and never post or answer any queries, it is a convenient way to learn about available resources. Hunting for birth records in a country such as Italy where record keeping is done locally rather than nationally, is very hard to do unless you know where, in Italy, your ancestors came from. Knowing what region, province, town or village they came from can make searching much easier for you. If you know the province, but do not know the region, or know the city, town or village and do not know the province, Wikipedia usually has excellent pages that can provide this information from you, and the postal codes site below may also be of assistance. About Family Search's Collections for Italy
Although they have indexed some of their collections for Italy, FamilySearch also has many collections for Italy which contain images for browsing and have not been indexed for searching by name. Unfortunately, that means that to easily take the most advantage of these databases, you need to either know their religion, or know where your ancestors came from at the state level, and preferably the provincia as well, because many records were reported at a higher level of government than the town. Some collections are just for one religion or town (Comune), those collection labeled "Tribunale" contain records for the tribunal court or county level and can include towns within a number of provinces, and there also are collections at the State level.
If you do not want to have to browse these dozens of collections and have no idea what area in Italy your ancestors came from, you might want to read the section about finding ancestral towns on our page about finding your ancestors.
Note that FamilySearch usually provides a range of years as part of the name of the collection, but the full ranges are usually just for marriage and death records. While there are exceptions that we have noted in the descriptions of the Family Search collections, in most cases, you will only find births through 90-100 years ago, with more recent records being unavailable to protect the privacy of those people listed who are still alive.
ITALY: BIRTH COLLECTIONS AND DATABASES
The resources listed below for Italy have been organized by region to make searching easier, for those of you who only know the region in Italy that your ancestors came from, but not the town or province. If you just know the town or province, you can try using Control-F or Apple-F to find specific religions, or towns, provinces and regions of interest mentioned in the descriptions below, or read the pages recommended above in the section about basic Italian Genealogy, to learn more about the towns, provinces and regions of Italy. But also be sure to check the national and multi-regional webpages that we have included in the first section below.

We prefer to not make you do a lot of surfing, but there is such a wealth of transcribed data that we have not been able to evaluate for listing here, that we are giving you these links if you want to do some exploring. ItalyGen is Daniela Massolo's site that has many free Italian Vital Records transcriptions, and also has many excellent links to free transcriptions on other sites. Catholic Church Records: The LDS site has images including baptisms in Altofonte, Balestrata, Bisacquino, Campofiorito, Camporeale, and Rocca Monreale in the Montreale Diocese, Palermo Province, as well as the provinces of Catania, Treviso and Vicenza. Cosenza Province: Montalto Uffugo - selected Birth Records/Birth Acts for 1827-1906, note that all births for 1856 and 1869 were being put online, not just selected surnames - transcriptions linked to scans of original documents. She provides separate custom searches specifically for the towns of Misilmeri and Ventimiglia. Birth Transcriptions from the town of Vizzini in Catania Province for most of the years between 1820 and 1860. Extracted from 16,876 records found on LDS microfilms. Project not completed for the years 1830, 1831, 1833-1836, 1851, 1852, 1855, or 1856, although you can find some birth extracts for some of these incomplete years in the database.
