FREE ONLINE BIRTH INDEXES AND RECORDS FOR THE BRITISH ISLES

This page is a partial listing of free online resources for finding birth records for England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Some of the webpages are government or library sites, while others are sponsored by religious or genealogy groups. Some sites, such as the Mormon (LDS) Family History resources and a few government sites, allow their visitors to view and download certificates for free. But, in most cases, you will need to order copies of birth certificates from the county or national government records office.

Many genealogy societies as well as governments and other organizations and groups are in the process of digitizing vital records, and their online databases are incomplete. That is because, rather than wait until all records have been indexed, they put the records indexed thus far online. So if you do not find what you want to find at a particular site, do check back periodically to see if the records you are interested in have been added to the database.

Most of these sites also allow you to search for marriages and deaths as well, but this page will only discuss birth indices, birth certificates, and baptismal records.

If you do not find what you need at the free sites listed below, check out our discussions about other general birth records resources on our main Birth Records Page. You may want to also search the Rootsweb Mailing Lists Archiver to see if anyone has transcribed newspaper birth announcements for the area you are interested in.

For a more complete, up to date list of birth and baptismal databases for countries in the British Isles at FamilySearch, see the menu at FamilySearch site. If the FamilySearch menus do not work for you, or you encounter problems using their updated site, please read about the FamilySearch sites on our Birth Records home page for more information about the FamilySearch sites and how to deal with problems using them.

On the home page of http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/, UKBMD has a dropdown box with over 100 counties listed in England, Ireland, and Wales. If you click on the county of interest, you will be taken to a more inclusive list of both free and pay sites containing genealogical information for that particular county. For free Local Registrar index sites, see their listing of Local BMD websites.

You may also wish to surf through the more comprehensive list of both free and paid birth and baptismal record sites on Cyndi's List. If you feel overwhelmed trying to skim long webpages trying to find what you are looking for, and do not know how to have your browser search for keywords on a page for you, then read this page about how to really easily find a word or phrase on a page with the help of your browser's "find" option.

We have removed the direct links to FamilySearch Pilot and Search Labs search pages for the British Isles which were previously listed below, because all those search pages have been removed by FamilySearch. If you are unhappy with the new search, the best we can recommend is to write to them, or post a complaint. For more details, see the section on our European births page about the FamilySearch sites.

If you find, or know of, any free birth index or birth records webpages not listed below, or find any errors or broken links, please email that information to me so we can make this page a more useful resource for everyone.

And check out the other types of truly free genealogy resources there are which you can access from home, by reading our resources page.

Orders of records from genealogy and vital records services in the British Isles usually cost significantly more money than the government as they charge additional processing fees. So, if you need official copies of birth records, be sure to order them direct from either the National GRO or from the local records offices.

UKBMD has the following page listing website links for at least 32 counties in England and Wales that have free online transcriptions of the original local register office birth indexes, ranging from 1837 up until the past decade. GENUKI has a wealth of transcriptions of births and baptisms for all over the British Isles. You can either drill down by area or use their search engine to find records of interest. The "Scotland Borders" website had many birth and baptismal extracts of official records, especially from the 1800's, and had it's own search engine. Although the website disappeared when Geocities shut down, you can still access the site through the Internet Archive. The catch is that none of the links on the pages there will work. If you want to view any other pages from the old site, you will need to paste their particular web addresses into the "Wayback Machine" search box at the Internet Archive.
