HILL / OSBURN CEMETERY

This historic old graveyard is located 8 miles south of Gainesville, east of FM 2071 and north of FM 922.    There is no sign and you must go through private property to reach it.    I have tenatively chosen to rename this cemetery HILL from the earlier name Osburn because after studying the old land map, I believe it was possibly located on the property of Aaron Hill whose wife, Elizabeth, was buried there in 1858.

The cemetery, which is not fenced away from cattle, is located in a wooded area beside an old stage road.   It proved to be one of the more difficult places to survey.   A groundcover smothers it during the summer months so it's advisable to visit it during the winter.    We literally had to step in sunken graves in order to take photographs of some stones which are scattered over a large area.   You will find many lost graves here.   Traces of old fencing which once enclosed family plots are often all that remain.   Surveyed on December 30, 2003.
