Cooke County, Texas Cemeteries
A precious one from us is gone
A voice we loved is stilled
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled.
Welcome to Cooke County Cemeteries. Surveying cemeteries is not for the faint of heart. It involves a lot of work to record, as accurately as possible, all known burials in a county. Many graves are marked only by weather worn sandstones which are difficult or impossible to read. Often, the stones are completely missing because livestock were allowed to roam through these old graveyards or a caretaker tossed the stones over a fence. I am attempting to identify lost graves through death records, obituaries, or family information so this remains a work in progress.
I would like to thank the folks who were so generous with their time and allowed me access to cemeteries located on their property. I am also indebted to those who did the earlier surveys in our county. A special thanks to Patti Tucker who did a lot of the footwork in 1978. Each name preserved is so important, as we look back now, sometimes more than 150 years ago, in search of that elusive family member who lived and died in Cooke County. I hope this site will be a big help to you in your family research.
***Note: This survey does not include the city cemetery of Rest Haven. I have begun a new survey of Fairview Cemetery in Gainesville which currently numbers over 19,000 burials as of February 2008. Until it's completed, I will be happy to do look-ups from the book published by the Cross Timbers Genealogical Society in 1984. Please provide a name and approximate year of death, if known.
