THOMAS
GRIMER LANG FAMILY HISTORY
----------------------------------------------
By: A.
E. (Gene) Lang dated:
Last
update: August 25, 2008
THOMAS GRIMER LANG was born in 1803 in Georgia, according to all
census records. He is believed to be a son of JOHN LANG and MARGARET _________
of 1820 Jones Co, 1810 of Jasper Co and of prior to 1800 of Greene County. A
series of LANGs with the name JOHN dates back to 1727 in South Carolina. The
1830 Henry Co census lists MARGARET age 60-70, THOMAS G LANG age 20-30, JOHN C
Lang age 20-30 and ROBERT LANG age 40-50. Thomas G and John C were brothers
living next door to each other. It is possible that ROBERT is the father of
Thomas G. and John C. (both Robert and his wife are old enough).
THOMAS LANG married MARIA ELIZA SAVAGE 14Aug1823 in Augusta,
Richmond Co GA. It is believed that Maria Eliza died in childbirth of WILLIAM W
LANG as no further records of her have been found. Also, no other records of a
Thomas Lang family have been found to indicate that this family moved elsewhere
during that time.

WILLIAM
W LANG (age 26) was not found in the 1850 census. ELIZABETH, THOMAS N, JOSHUA
B, OLIVE, DAVID J, NANCY, Josey and Joseph are the children of NANCY HARPER.
FRANCIS M. and BENJAMIN F appear to be the children of SARAH T (Sallie) MOORE,
as were several other children born later.
ASA
HARPER, Pg-288/66/66, next door in the census appears to be a brother of NANCY
HARPER, 2nd wife of Thomas G. Lang.
BETSY
(Elizabeth) HARPER with two children in the household of Thomas G. Lang appears
to be the sister-in-law of Thomas G. Lang and Asa Harper.
WILLIAM
W. LANG and BETSEY HARPER married 06Nov1851 in Coweta County. He was 27 and she
was 41. They moved to Campbell Co. and were there in 1860 (Listed as WILLIAM W
LONG in census)
with ASA HARPER living next door. There are no records of children being born
to them. William W. Lang died in the Civil War.
JOSHUA
BAKER LANG married LETTY A.HOLLAND Abt.1852. They had five children; NANCY E.
(1853) JAMES H.THOMAS(1856), DAVID ANDREW JACKSON(1859), HILLYARD A. (1861) and
MARY A. (1856). Mary A. was born after Joshua B Lang was killed in the Civil
War. Lettie is believed to be the sister of Harriett Ann Holland Shelnut who
marries Thomas Grimer Lang after the death of Sallie Moore.
THOMAS
NEWTON LANG married ELIZABETH R. CARROLL 01Jan1855 Coweta Co GA. She appears to
have been the eldest daughter of MICHAEL REDWINE CARROLL and MARY BULLARD.
Thomas N. and Elizabeth had eight children, but only three sons lived, JAMES
WOODSON (b.1855), MICHAEL REDWINE (b.1860) and THOMAS J. (b.1862), all the sons
appear to have been born in Paulding Co. Thomas N and Elizabeth lived most of
their lives near Hiram in Paulding Co, except in 1870 when they were listed in
Coweta on the family homestead. Thomas Newton Lang died in 1901 and Elizabeth
R. Carroll Lang died in 1906. They both are buried in Poplar Springs Cemetery

THOMAS GRIMER LANG
FAMILY IN THE CIVIL WAR YEARS:
The
CIVIL WAR took its toll on this LANG family. Those who went to war for the
South were WILLIAM W, THOMAS NEWTON, JOSHUA B, DAVID J, JOSEY(James) and JOSEPH.
Of the six sons who served in the war, only Thomas N. Lang appears to have
survived.
William W. Lang died in field hospital,
Savannah GA 01Apr1864.
Thomas N. Lang, CSA 1861-1865 (b.1829
d.1901)survived the war.
Joshua B. Lang wounded Kennesaw Mtn, died Atlanta GA hosp.
1864.
David J. Lang entered CSA 1861, no record
of him ever found after the war.
Josey F. Lang captured Atlanta, died Camp Chase Ohio
25Aug1864.
Joseph Lang died in field hospital,
Knoxville TN 1862.
SARAH
T. (MOORE) LANG died about 1864. THOMAS G. LANG married HARRIET ANN (HOLLAND) SHELNUTT
about 1865 or 1866. They had three children before the 1870 census,

that he is the brother of Elizabeth R. (Carroll) Lang.
Note:
Lettie A. (Holland) Lang married John W. Kelly after the death of Joshua Baker
Lang in the Civil War. She is listed in this census with the children of Joshua
and a son with John Kelly. They appear to be living in one of the houses on the
Thomas G. Lang homestead.

In
the household of Thomas G. Lang is listed ELLIOT I LANG, ISAAH A LANG and MARY
F(Frances) LANG. All appear to be grand-children. None were located in the 1860
census. According to the 1880 census ISAAH and MARY FRANCES were only 7 years
old in 1870. It appears that ISAAH A LANG is the son of OLIVE LANG (born out of wedlock
during the Civil War) since he is shown as her son living with her in 1880 after her
marriage to WILLIAM B BULLARD. Parentage of the others is undetermined.
A
new house was built for the LANG family around 1870 while Thomas N. Lang and
Francis M. Lang were living on the homeplace in Coweta Co. The two story house
was described as an early Georgian architectural style with hand carved dentils
(decorations) with beautifully crafted
chimneys and windows with handmade glass panes. In the Civil War Thomas N Lang
was an "Artificer" (Engineer/Craftsman).
THOMAS
N. LANG and his family moved back to Paulding Co. GA between 1870 and 1880,
where he and ELIZABETH R CARROLL LANG spent the remainder of their lives.
OLIVE
LANG married WILLIAM B. BULLARD 23Dec1874 in Coweta Co. She was 40 years old at
the time. Nothing more is known about William B. Bullard, as he was not found
in the 1870 census of Coweta Co. He appears to have died or they divorced (unlikely) prior to the 1880
census.
JASPER
E. LANG married LUCY J. SHELNUTT 05Dec1876 in Coweta Co. GA. They had at least
two children, HENRY (b.1877/78) and WILLIAM C. (b.1879). They were not found in
the 1900 census in Coweta County and were probably living elsewhere during that
time.

HARRIETT
ANN SHELNUTT (nee HOLLAND) LANG b.15Mar1827 d.28Sep1880 as inscribed on her
gravestone. A book "History of Coweta County", page 68, also lists
her death. She was written as 66 years old, but according to the marker she was
only 53 years old.
THOMAS
GRIMER LANG b.1803 d.25Mar1881 according to a descendant, JIMMY LANG (per Coweta Co
Genealogy Society). The year of death was also noted in a book "Coweta County
Chronicles" by Jones & Reynolds, page 245. He was written as being
between 80 and 90 years old, but he was only 78 years old when he died.
THOMAS
GRIMER LANG, SARAH T (Sallie) MOORE LANG, and HARRIET H. SHELNUTT (nee HOLLAND)
LANG are buried in Coweta Co on the old LANG family homestead, in marked
graves. The family cemetery, known locally as the LANG/MOORE cemetery, is
located about 300 feet to the Northeast from the house next to an old field
road that goes to the Chattahoochee River. There are about twenty graves in the
cemetery, but only the three have tombstones, which are handmade from concrete.
One grave, near those with tombstones, is covered with white mussell shells
from the river while others are marked only with stones. The old LANG home is
still being lived in to this day.
*
----------------------------------------------------- *
THOMAS GRIMER LANG HOMESTEAD:
The
THOMAS GRIMER LANG homestead was 384 acres according to the 1840 Coweta Co GA
Tax List. It is located in the Northwest corner of Coweta County GA and
bordered on the West by the Chattahoochee River. The home and cemetery is on
ADCOCK Road on a very sharp bend (about 300 degrees). See Maps. Directions:
From
NEWNAN GA, the county seat, go NORTH on SR-70 about 10 miles to the community
of Roscoe. (SR-70 makes a sharp 90 degree turn to the East at this point and
Oliver Potts Road is to the left).
Turn
LEFT (West) on OLIVER POTTS ROAD, go about 1 to 1-1/2 miles to dead end
at ADCOCK ROAD.
Turn
RIGHT (North) on ADCOCK ROAD, go about 1 to 1-1/2 miles to where the
road makes a very sharp bend to the right. The two story house is located on
the outside of the bend. The LANG/MOORE cemetery is located about 100 yds to
the right of the house down an old field trail through the woods (look on the right
side of the road).
(note:
Adcock Road also goes North off of Oliver Potts Road about about 1/4 mile West
of SR-70 just past Starr Pond Road. This way also may be taken to the house on
the sharp bend)
