BULLARD
From Bullard Allied Families on GenealogyLibrary.com Main Page
The surname Bullard is of Norman-French origin, tracing back to the 10th century when the Norman, De Boulard or De Bulwarde, was carried into England by the followers of the Conquerer. The early records of the name in England and New England show many ramifications in spelling, and Bullwarde, Bullwer, and Bullard are found to indicate a single individual on the town or parish records. Among the earliest families of the name in England is General Bullwer of Wood Dalling and Haydon Hall,
Norfolk, whose son, Sir Edward George Earl Lytton Bullwer, was a brilliant and gifted writer and
diplomat, and the father of Bullwer Lytton, who assumed the ancestral name and estates of Lytton,
becoming Baron Lytton, author of prose and poems, under the nom de plume of "Owen Meredith."

Burke, in his "Dictionary of Peerages and Baronage," gives the following description of the
Coat-of-Arms of William Earl Bullwer, Esq., of Wood Dalling; as "quartered with the Arms of
Lytton. Gules, on a chevron Argent, between three eagles, regardant, Or. as many cinquefoils Sable;
Crest--an heraldic Tigers head, erased Ermine, crined and armed, Or."

The identity of the first of the name of Bullard in America has been established beyond a reasonable
doubt, through the research of the late J. Gardner Bartlett, an eminent genealogist, and an expert
authority on the English ancestry of many early New England settlers.

ENGLISH ANCESTORS

BULLARD, BULLWARD, AND BULLER
OF BARNHAM, CO. SUFFOLK, ENGLAND,
AND WATERTOWN AND DEDHAM IN NEW ENGLAND

(By J. GARDNER BARTLETT of Boston, Mass.)

The accompanying records were obtained from the Probate Registry at Bury St. Edmunds, the
transcripts at the Archdeacon's Registry there of the parish registers of Barnham St. Martin, and the
Public Record Office in London.

The loss of the Barnham Registers prevents making a complete record of this family 1560-1640; but
the will of Grace Bullard, widow of William, in 1630, and the transcripts that are preserved for nearly
half the years 1560-1640 of the Barnham Registers enable a partial chart to be made of this family
marked "B." Most of the children of William and Grace Bullard must have been born in years for
which transcripts of the registers are not preserved.

I have blocked out on chart "C" what the New England records reveal about the four Bullard
emigrants, William, Robert, John, and George. While no proofs seem to exist in New England to
show that they were brothers, it would seem probable that they were closely related. A comparison of the data on charts "B" and "C" indicates beyond any possible doubt that the families were identical.

This identity is further established because the four brothers disappeared from Barnham before 1640;
and Suffolk is the county whence came nearly all our Watertown and Dedham settlers.
