New Mexico/Texas GILES Families

Thomas Evans Giles, son of William and Sarah Young Giles, was married to Mary Lou Brown December 1, 1864 at Boerne, Kendall County Texas. They came to Union County New Mexico in September 1899 and settled on the Cimarron River seventeen miles west of Kenton Oklahoma. There were ten children.

William Ridley and MittieWalker Giles and young son Oscar William spent the winter of 1899 in Fort Sumner where a daughter Mittie was born April 10 1900. They soon moved to the Cimarron.

Thomas Evans Jr and Titia Dabney Giles children were:
Ina, Edgar, Hope, Caleb, Tommy and Eugene.

Walter P Giles had come to New Mexico in 1895 and married Ophelia Parmer. Their children were:
Mary, Tom, Walter and Albert.

Addie married Ezra G (Bud) Freeman. Children:
Merle, Howard, Bethel annd Loren (Cuch)

Sally and Herbert Davis children were:
Amy, Bill, Tom, Paul, Herbert, Margaret and Shirley.

May and Monroe Howell's children were:
Bernice, John Evans, Keith and Kelly.

Frances Lou and J Luther Minnich's children were:
Mary Lou and Jimmy.

John Caleb, James Brown and Maggie V never married.

Thomas Evans Giles Sr died March 4, 1900, and soon after his mother Sarah Giles came to make her home with the family. She died February 14, 1901. Mittie Walker Giles died March 11. 1901 and March 25, 1902 Addie Freeman died. March seemed an unlucky month as Sally Davis died in 1912. All are buried at the Giles cemetery on the old homestead in the Cimarron Valley.

With the passing of two daughters and a daughter-in-law, the small motherless children came to live with their grandmother (affectionately called Gram), their Aunt Mag, Uncle Will and Uncle Cale. At one time there were six grandchildren present ranging in age from six weeks to six years.

In August 1924, Aunt Mag, Uncle Cale and "Gram" moved to Clayton so that Margaret and Shirley could go to school.To Oscar also, this was home until January 27, 1932, he and Palma Quinlan and her sister Katherine and Virgil Hughes were married in a couple ceremony at Raton , New Mexico.

After proving up on a claim in Sheep Pen Canyon, Oscar and Palma moved to Clayton in May 1937 and bought a ranch three miles northwest of town and engaged in raising registered Herefords.

The following family members are buried in the Clayton cemetery.

Oscar and his wife the former Josephine Goats Wallace now live in Tucumcari New Mexico.

Jesse D. "Buzz" Giles, 61, of Flowery Branch,
formerly of Chamblee, died Wednesday.
Born in Cleburne, Texas, he was employed with Ascot Realty in Buford as a real estate manager.
He was a graduate of Pascal High School in Fort Worth, Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Chris Giles, Flowery Branch,
daughters, Cindy Drooker, Suwanee, and Alesha Giles, Woodstock, sons, Gary Giles, Alpharetta, and Kenny Giles, Suwanee, stepchildren, Jason Kirby, Lawrenceville, and Dana Duncan, Oakwood, brothers, Gary Willard Giles and Gerald Giles, both of Fort Worth, Texas, 12 grandchildren and several other relatives.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m.
Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorial services are scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Flanigan Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association.
