My grandmother called him "M. C.", as did his sisters sometimes. Everyone else called him "Pete" after his grandfather, Patrick Eustace "Pete" Currie. I was a junior in high school before I knew what "M. C." stood for. He always told me that "M. C." was all there was to his name.
My mother was called "Tuffy" by all of her friends. The family story is ... when "Pete" was dating her he came by the house on a wash day. When he saw her she was carrying a big wash tub full of water out of the yard to dump. He yelled, "Hey Tuffy, wait a minute and I'll help you". Her mother flew all over him, fussing and complaining about him calling her "Tuffy". The name stuck.
