Second Generation

82. Daniel4 Wallingford (Daniel3, Lebanon2 Wallingfords, Unconnected1) was born in Lebanon, York County, Maine about 1825.(329) (Based on the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Lebanon, Maine.) Chamberlain only speculates that he belongs in this family. Shackford listed him with the unconnected branches of the family. He clearly belongs somewhere in the muddied Lebanon branch of the family, and his presence here as son of Daniel should not be considered any kind of proof of relationship. But since his 'father' is unconnected as well, they can remain together for the time being.

He married twice. He married first, Jane Wallingford, 6 August 1847, in Berwick, York County, Maine.(330) They were both living in Berwick when they got married.

Jane was born 6 February 1823, in Lebanon, York County, Maine.(331) Jane died 9 April 1902, in Rochester, Strafford County, New Hampshire.(332) She was the daughter of William B. Wallingford and Joanna Pierce.(333)

He married second?, Abigail F. Jacobs, 29 March 1868, in Sanford, York County, Maine.(334) Abigail was born 30 July 1851, in Sanford, York County, Maine. (Based on death record. Date calculated from age at death.) Abigail was the daughter of Charles W. Jacobs and Clarissa Dorr.

Abigail died 31 December 1897, in Springvale, York County, Maine.(335)

In the 1850 census of Lebanon Daniel was a 25-year old farmer born in Maine and living on a small piece of land worth $130. Living with him was Jane, 24, born Maine who is presumably his wife and Nancy, age 6 born in Maine, who is presumably a daughter. In 1860 Daniel and Jane were still living in Lebanon, and Daniel's occupation was given as "farm laborer". His real property was worth $50 and his personal property $40, which indicates that the family was quite poor.(336)

In 1870 Daniel is found in Lebanon living with his second wife Abigail F. His age was given as 40, born in Maine, when our Daniel should have been 45, and next door is the family of Charles and Clarissa Jacobs. Abigail was only 18 years old and they had a child Lucy A. Wallingford, aged 9 months, living with them.(337)

Shackford makes no mention of a second wife and states that Daniel's wife Jane died 9 April 1902 in Rochester. This death record should be checked to see if she is the same person. Perhaps they divorced, or she was married to a different Wallingford. Shackford does say that Lucy A. Wallingford was the daughter of Daniel and Abby (Jacobs) Wallingford, and his information may have come from Lucy's marriage certificate.(338) Shackford also places a daughter Nancy Jane in this family, born between William and Harriet, then on the next page calls her Jane and her age at death would have her born in 1844 when their first child Nancy was born.(339) We will assume them to be one and the same and that Nancy either had the middle name of Jane or took the name of Jane later in life.

Daniel Wallingford and Jane Wallingford had the following children:

child + 151 i. Nancy (Jane?)5 Wallingford was born 24 January 1844.

child 152 ii. Unnamed Wallingford was born in Lebanon, York County, Maine 18 December 1849.(340) This child, whose birth was mentioned in the account book of Dr. Samuel W. Jones simply as "child of Daniel Wallingford", may be the daughter Olive, whose age was given as nine in the 1860 census.

child 153 iii. Olive Wallingford was born probably in Lebanon, Maine about 1851. (Based on the 1860 census of Lebanon.) She may be the "child of Daniel Wallingford" born on 18 December 1849. Shackford calls "him" Oliver but my notes for the 1860 census have "her" as Olive.

child 154 iv. William Wallingford was born probably in Lebanon, Maine about 1853?. (Based on the 1860 census of Lebanon. The age was illegible but may have been 7. He was old enough to be in school, so seven sounds reasonable.) William died unmarried, of pneumonia, 15 July 1906, in Rochester, Strafford County, New Hampshire.(341)

child 155 v. Harriet Wallingford was born probably in Lebanon, Maine about 1859. (She was 3/4 of a year old in the 1860 census of Lebanon.) She married Unknown Seavey.(342)

Daniel Wallingford and Abigail F. Jacobs had the following children:

child 156 vi. Lucy A. Wallingford was born probably in Lebanon, Maine about 1869. (Based on an age of 9 months in the 1870 census of Lebanon.) She married another member of the Wallingford family -- Herbert E. Wallingford (Andrew J., George, Jonathan, Garland, John, John, John, Nicholas). See his record for more information.

child + 157 vii. Otis Wallingford was born 17 September 1872.
