718. Rachel A.9 Wallingford (Amos8, Jonathan7, Garland6, John5, John4, John3, John2, Nicholas1) was born in Berwick, York County, Maine about 1862 to 1868.(3378) Place of birth is from her son Clarence's birth record in Lebanon town books, which also says Rachel was 17 at the time, suggesting a birth date for her of 1875 or so. 1870 and 1880 Berwick censuses should be checked to properly estimate her year of birth.
She married James C. Pierce, 31 December 1891, in Lebanon, York County, Maine.(3379) She was of Rochester and he was of Lebanon at the time of their marriage.
James was born about 1873, in Lebanon, York County, Maine. (Place and calculated year comes from birth record of his son Clarence) Chamberlain calls him John Colby Pierce and says he was from South Lebanon.(3380) The record of their son Clarence's birth confirms that they were from South Lebanon, and says he was a farmer. The listing of their nine children come from two sources. Shackford, who wrote his work first, simply lists the nine children without any dates of birth, but then adds to the left of the list a column of eight numbers, leaving space for only eight children, and for the 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th children he says they are sons and add a birth date. Presumably he found records for unnamed sons of this couple born on those dates but could not specify which sons.(3381) Charles Wallingford, on the other hand, lists the same nine children, in the same order, but for those who would fit in as 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th he assigns them the birth dates of the unnamed sons.(3382) In so doing he differs in two cases from what Shackford wrote, but he has been proven to be a careless transcriber on many previous occasions so Shackford is more likely correct. Shackford lists the Lebanon Vital Records as one source so presumably got the dates from there. He further lists the Lebanon Register as another source, which may be the source of the children's names. Rochester Town Reports, which haven't been fully checked yet, include the births of their 5th and 6th children, both males, in 1900 and 1901, and neither is named. The dates are 9 September 1900 (born in East Rochester) and 11 September 1901 (also East Rochester). Shackford misses the 1900 date but has the 1901 date, as well as the date of 22 December 1898 for the 4th child, 21 November 1903 for the 7th child, and 6 January 1904 for the 8th child.
Rachel A. Wallingford and James C. Pierce had the following children:
806 i. Orville H.10 Pierce.(3383)
807 ii. Frank L. Pierce.(3384)
808 iii. Clarence S. Pierce was born in Lebanon, York County, Maine probably in 1892.(3385) His birth record in the Lebanon town books is undated but appears with other births from the year 1892.
809 iv. Lawrence L. Pierce was born in Rochester, Strafford County, New Hampshire 22 or 26 December 1898?.(3386) Charles Wallingford gives a date of 26 December, while Shackford lists the birth of an unnamed son on 22 December.
810 v. Arthur E. Pierce was born in East Rochester, Strafford County, New Hampshire 9 September 1900.(3387) No first name was included in the Rochester Town Report record of his birth, but doing a search in the online Social Security Death Index for Pierces born on that date brought up Arthur as the only male candidate. The birth record said he was their 5th child. Arthur died 3 March 1981, in Biddeford, Maine.(3388)
811 vi. Fred N. Pierce was born 2 September 1901?.(3389)
812 vii. Harold E. Pierce was born 21 November 1903?.(3390)
813 viii. John M. Pierce was born 6 January 1904 or 6 June 1905?.(3391) Shackford gives a date of 6 January 1905 while Charles Wallingford give 6 June 1905.
814 ix. James Pierce.(3392)
