In a letter from his brother Calvin of Conneaut, Ohio, to his uncle the Rev. Addi Lee, dated July 14, 1850, Calvin wrote (in part), "...a great many gone from this vicinity to California within the last year but no returns of money yet. My brother Estes is among those that have gone. He left a wife and child at St Louis. I have not heard from him since he got fairly at work(2326)."

He served in the Civil War as Adjutant in the 33d Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was captured and died in a Confederate prison.(2327)
