MILITARY-SERVICE: Jack Cole was enlisted in the army as a private 3 times. The first time was for a brief month. It is believed that he enlisted underaged and was discharged for this reason. The second and third times were longer service. It is believed that the second service period was spend mainly at El Paso. Source: Honorable Discharge Papers (See source list for citation and actual text), Personal knowledge of Catherine Cole (written 2007).

MILITARY-SERVICE: Anecdote from Catherine Cole: "In 1947 Jack was in the army for 1 month and 1 day. In 1947, Jack would have been 17 years old. I don't think you could join the army until you were 18 unless maybe we were at war, as in WWII? In 1947 there may have been a conflict, but not a war. Once when we were dating, I asked him how old he was (because mother wanted to know) and he said something to the effect that he had three birth certificates, which one did I want to know? He said he was released because he had lied about his age. However, you will notice on the 1947 discharge papers, line 40, there is a reason given for separation, which I don't understand, but maybe one could find out? [This was for Convenience of Government... no revelation in the reason.]" Source: Personal correspondence from Catherine Cole to Paul and Terry Cole, dated May 11, 2005.

MILITARY-SERVICE: Anecdote from Catherine Cole: "The 1950 discharge papers [from the army] do not give a reason, nor does it say when he enlisted. In 1950, he would have been 20. Jack once told me he could not do boot camp training because of knee injuries. Maybe they discharged him because of that." Source: Personal correspondence from Catherine Cole to Paul and Terry Cole, dated May 11, 2005.

MILITARY-SERVICE: Anecdote from Catherine Cole: "The 1952 discharge papers I believe he [Jack] gave me some info on. He was taken into the army because of his high IQ specifically for officer training. Jack stuttered very badly, but they were confident that they could fix that. They put him in an army hospital on the Tex./Mex border (El Paso??? He said he could walk across the bridge into Mexico. ) They called in their best surgeons from all over, but he had some paralyzed vocal cords and they could not repair them. He remained in the hospital there until someone finally said the buck stops here and signed his discharge papers. He could go out wherever he wanted every day, he could go to the rehab floor and make whatever he wanted, jewelry, belt buckles, etc, at no cost to him. He had a friend who also was physically able to go out during the day, and they often went over into Mexico together. That was a very bad time for Jack, because he was healthy as a horse, and they were bringing in wounded every day, boys with no arms, legs, etc.... He spent time reading to them, playing checkers, cards, etc, writing letters for them, etc. I don't imagine he read to them much, though, as when he came home, he was unable to talk well enough for most people to understand him, and was a nervous wreck. After that he must have gone the RCA rodeo circuit again, because he apparently went back to HS in 53-54, and he said he did that because of "old lady English teacher" who talked him into it while he was home from the rodeo recuperating from a broken arm. As you can see from his first discharge papers, he had quit HS during his freshman year. They let him start back as a senior. The principal made up some things he had taken, or maybe said he had taken them correspondence. I don't know how they managed that, but there had been a fire that burned school records, so they managed to do that for him. They omitted plane geometry, though, required for HS graduation, so Dean Muller at PAMC [Panhandle A&M College] made him check out a Plane Geometry correspondence course...which he never did any of. However, on his College diploma, it says he took it; I guess that was all that mattered." Source: Personal correspondence from Catherine Cole to Paul and Terry Cole, dated May 11, 2005.

EDUCATION: Anectote from Catherine Cole: "I have never seen any paper work on his [Jack] attending Radio/TV Electronics School in Wichita, KS, but I know he did. In OK [Oklahoma], the state will send a handicapped person to school to learn a trade. Christine [Jack's mother] said someone from the state came to their house and talked him [Jack] into doing that. Then, while he was in Wichita, going to the tech school and sacking groceries in a Supermarket, he also attended the speech school in Wichita. Jack said it was the best [speech school] in the world at the time, and his own personal Dr. was supposed to be the very best in the world. He could not do much of the usual therapy, involving music and singing, as he [Jack] was tone deaf. So she developed a program for him [Jack] based on poetry and actions designed to slow down his thinking processes so his speech could keep up, and to relax his body (the vocal cords, particularly) so that he could get maximum use from them. He said an example would be to walk a certain distance in much more time than it should take (slow motion) and many other tasks similarly done in slow motion. He bragged that he could make himself relax to the point that he could go to sleep anytime or anyplace on demand. He should have kept up those exercises.... I did try half-heartedly to get him to. When I met Jack in college, he stuttered a lot, but people say it was nothing compared to what he was when he returned from the army hospital. Everyone I have talked to about him says he came back from that speech school radically improved. One of the first things I admired about him was that he had no timidity about speaking up in class or anywhere. He was well liked by faculty and students alike. I couldn't believe it when we were walking to class one day and the president of the college stopped to chat with him. One day when we were chatting with our bacteriology instructor, he told us something about what he had done to overcome timidity and speech defects (his mouth had obviously seen some surgery, but he didn't give or I don't remember the details). Jack surprised me by saying that he would literally give up his right arm in exchange for the ability to stand before an audience and speak."  Source: Personal correspondence from Catherine Cole to Paul and Terry Cole, dated MAy 11, 2005.

After marriage he acquired a red long haried dog, Skipper, which lived with him and his wife in Borger and lived until child Terry was a toddler. Jack also cared for his wife's dogs, Pat and Skeeter. Jack was an avid tropical fish fan, and kept a room full of tanks in the Buena Vista house. Jack helped select his son Terry's first dogs,  Buffy and Jody. Jack raised several litters of dogs by Buffy. In connection with selecting a Carin Terrier to replace Jody, Jack fell in love with a off-white show Carin named Ben in Oklahoma City. This dog was given to Jack as an act of kindness by the owners when the dog retired from shows. Jack raised several litters of puppied by Ben and Buffy. Jack so loved Ben that he had his tounge sticthed up in an elaborate surgery when it was bitten off in a fight.  Jack acquired a cat for his wife from Roger Mills Co., Oklahoma. The cat, named Sugar, was half barn cat and half bob cat. She had only a short natural tail, and she was yellow striped like a bob cat. Jack acquired a prarie dog pup for his son Terry by a trapping method in which the pup falls into a post hole as it emerges in the spring.  While Terry grew up, Jack and he kept rabbits, Silky chickens, pheasants, and quail in cages in the back yard. Terrapins were often caught and release in the back yard with a short chain attached to a small hole at the edge of their shell so they could be found later. Jack acquired an appaloosa horse as his son Paul was growing up from friend, Frosty Estes. Frosty also gave Jack his working gray mare from his range when she needed to retire. Paul and Jack kept these horses together in a barn located in Philips, Hutchinson Co., Texas leased by Jack. Jack acquired his son Paul a painted colt to raise as well. "They however loved Granddad Jim, calling him Uncle Jim, and believed him to be their uncle until they were older and their Mother explained the actual lineage...that Uncle Harry was really their true Uncle, not Uncle Jim. Katie told me that story. She said she cried and cried because she didn't want it to be true. She said they adored their "Uncle Jim" and always got so excited when they would see him come riding into sight on his horse "Snip" with his dog ...name I cannot remember though I vaguely remember the dog. We had a pup of his until he died of old age...Daddy really loved that dog as did we all ("Butch")."
