REFLECTIONS OF MARANO PRINCIPATO On the side of a mountain, surrounded by lush green vegetation lies this village, home to over 2,000 residents. It's a place where narrow 200-year-old lanes intersect modern widened streets. Its contemporary square lies at the foot of the town’s main church, SS Annunziata, along via Annunziata. Another little known chapel, SS Antonio, is tucked away in the neighborhood known as Savaglio. It is capable of holding no more than 50 Sunday worshippers. The surrounding green countryside, viewable from most any second or third floor window at increasing elevation, offers the village shelter, food and even cooking material. The smell of burning wood permeates the air mixing with the aroma of a variety of foods from homes new and old. The air is cool and light and the sun shines brightly, illuminating the panacea. The distance between of this village and the provincial seat of Cosenza is small enough that even the sounds of human voices – talking and laughing – can be heard. The tranquility is only disturbed by the occasional roar of an automobile winding around the narrow, hilly streets. This is the place that has experienced several million sunrises and sunsets and all that exists during a waking day, including what life brings – from birth to death. The following pages add a further dimension to the life that existed and the steps that walked the roads of Marano Principato during the 19th and early 20th century.
