Records show concentrations of Tennant's in the central belt of Scotland, in Falkirk, Ayrshire, Lanarkshire and Glasgow. Note that Linlescu or Linlefcu is now Linlithgow. Anstruther under 40 miles from Edinburgh by boat. Today there are no Tennent or Tennant names listed against Anstruther in the telephone directory. But 4 Tennent's & 14 Tennant's in the county of Fife. Edinburgh has 3 Tennent's & 36 ant's. Linlithgow has 6 ent's & 33 ant's. John Tennant (1635-1728) Miller of Alloway, Ayrshire. sp. His Glasgow works became the largest chemical plant in the world at that time (1800c). The tall factory chimney being called "Tennant's Stalk" by the locals. A descendant, Sir Iain Tennant lives in Morayshire and this branch created the Tennant tartan around 1930. Another book that might be useful to researchers is "Broken Blood - The Rise and Fall of The Tennant Family" 1987 by Simon Blow, ISBN 0-571-13374-6 but it deals chiefly with the recent history of Charles Tennant's family. His grandson Sir Charles(b1823) made a second fortune in Australian railways and gold. Edward(b1859) the son of this Charles became 1st Baron Glenconner of the Glen in 1911. Relevance:No proof of Irish connection but intrigued by similar first names ie William son of Richard and grandson of Robert. Four generations after this Richard there was a Pierce (b1855) but this unusual name, as used in my branch, may be coincidence. Relevance: Right age to be Thomas of Thomas/Judith but married wrong person! If he also married Judith it means he left Margaret and moved to Ireland to have a son Richard by 1749 ie married, separated (or widowed) then fathered another son by time 20 years old. John Tennant b1730 approx, sp Agnes McClure m 16 June 1756 Ayr Son=Thomas b 20 Jan 1757 Ayr also John (b1768, m1792 Ann Boag, David, John(2nd). David lost his right hand during a naval battle, offered knighthood but refused. Burns refers to him in the "Epistle to James Tennant" as "the manly tar, my mason-billie" David Tennant (1734-1823) Marjorie King reminds me that John (Auld Glen) had a brother called David to whom I may have referred mistakenly in correspondence, when in fact I meant David 1762. However I do know for certain that I was not named after either!! William Tennant, in 1768 bought a house at 54 High Street, Anstruther, Fife, Scotland. House rebuilt in 1801 by son Alexander.
