Letter #13
Written January 29, 1812 by Gary Van Sackett, son of William
A. Sackett, in Cayuga Village, NY to Uncle Alexander Sackett MD. Probably
in Ohio.
*************************************
The identity of Uncle Alexander Sackett MD presents a bit of
a problem. The only Alexander Sackett who was a doctor known to me
was Alex, the son of Dr. Samuel Sackett; who according to the letter written
to Dr. Samuel by Alex Sackett in 1811, he was in Rossville, OH. However,
Dr. Samuel and Gary's father William were cousins. Therefore, it would
appear that Gary used the term Uncle to designate a cousin.

Sacketts in the letter:
Gary V. Sackett who wrote the letter; son of Willaim A.
Sackett
William A. Sackett, son of Jonathan Sackett m. Hannah
Phelps
Alexander Sackett MD, probably the son of Dr. Samuel Sackett
m. Sarah Manning

Dear Uncle,
From your letter to my father William
Sackett, I have learned the place of your re-
sidence & that of your family. The relation
you gave of their circumstances was very
pleasing to us, your friends in this country.
Also the relation, which you gave of the country
in which your family is settled pleased me
very much; but it gave my father many
fears and apprehensions that the beautiful
description which you gave of it would
intice some of his children into its
lands.
Some of your family, you write is
on the Miama River, in the state of Ohio.
That is a place of which I have read with the
utmost attention and partiality, and which
I am resolved to see in the course of three
months.
I am now a student at law under
Thomas Mumford, Esq. in this village, within
four miles of my parents.
I always calculated to settle in the state
of Ohio, and I should therefore be glad to
study in that state remain(?) part of
my time.
Now my dear uncle what I request
of you is that you would write me your
opinion respecting what I have above stated
and that it might be as soon as con-
venient.
My parents, brothers and sisters send
their warmest attachments to your fam
ily, as does your very cordial and
affectionate nephew,
Gary V. Sackett
Alexander Sackett MD
