Most folks by surname of AUNGST are listed per 1870 census for OHIO as living in Richland and Seneca Counties; although I have found others in Guernsey and Erie Co OH as well as IN, PA, and elsewhere. I find various spellings of Aungst as Unangst, Angst, and even Richard Angarsh at Guernsey Co OH, and more. I am putting them down as found.
My great great grampa, John Aungst (Sept 1838 Bellville OH - 1911 Ft Wayne IN), is shown in this census of 1870, age 30, at Richland County, Jefferson Turnpike OH; married (Elisa) with one child, Mattie. NOTE: In 1860, John is found as John AUNGHST age 23 at Richland Co OH, Jefferson, Bellville working for Thomas Grattan 34 and wife Catherine 23. In 1850 John is listed age 13 living with Elizabeth Aungst 65 born PA, James 35 born OH (handicapped) and Sarah 25. In 1880, John and Elizabeth (Crunkilton) Aungst and child, Mattie, are in Wyandot Co OH. John and Eliza Aungst are also at Crane, Wyandot Co OH in 1910 (and in Wyandot in 1900). They moved to Ft Wayne IN when he became ill, where he died, living at his married daughter's home (Mrs. Samuel Rohrbacker). John Aungst and his wife ( Eliz M Crunkilton) are buried at Nevada Cemetery, Eden Turnpike (Upper Sandusky) in Wyandot Co OH. John Aungst was a Mason, master carpenter, and contractor by trade. His wife's parents, Robert C Crunkilton 1814-95 and wife, Jane (Wilson) 1815-1906 married 1838, he from Franklin County PA and she at Wooster, Wayne Co OH from MD; they also buried at Nevada Cemetery. John and Elizabeth Crunkilton Aungst married in 1861 and adopted Mattie (Mrs. Samuel Aungst Robacker) 1867 OH 1940 OR; Mattie being my great grama who had Ophelia Robacker Black sister to Avery W Robacker). Mattie appears to the biological d/o James Aungst and Martha J Lemley; this James being related to a Sam S and a George W, per 1867 court records of Richland Co OH.
Elizabeth Crunkilton Aungst went from Ft Wayne IN to Oregon about 1911 after her husband John died, with her daughter Mattie w/o Samuel J Robacker and children (Avery and Ophelia) where she died (buried OH with husband). She died a few days earlier than her grandaughter, Ophelia Robacker Black (my grama) in 1919 at Clackamus Co Oregon. Mattie and Samuel J Robacker divorced in 1917 in Oregon; she went to live with her son (Avery Robacker and wife Anna Laurie Reardon), where she died 1940. Ophelia and her mother Mattie are buried side by side in an Oregon City suburb, OR ~ see photo page for more data. Clinton Black (widower 1919) and his three children (Robert, James, Ellen) went onto Escondido CA and lived with his parents (Frank and Maggie); he remarried some years later (1929) Mrs. Nana Lois Bresler Biddlecome and had another (little Nana Black who grew up and married Joseph Hughs. Sam Robacker remarried Rosa O Drips after he and Mattie (Aungst) divorced.
Wilsons, Crunkiltons, DeJeans, Myers, McCurdys, and Aungsts are buried at Nevada Cemetery Eden Twp Wyandot Co OH. Samuel J Black was pall bearer at John Aungst's funeral in OH in 1911, and member of Walpole Masons as well as John Aungst and others who attended same.
One census says John Aungst's father was from NY or VA and his mother from OH ~ two other censuses say his parents are from Ohio and another unknown. From another, it appears that John Aungst's parents were from OH PA and MD VA, respectively. Per the 1850 census Elizabeth Aungst age 65 was born 1785 PA in which John is 13; it would so appear that this Elizabeth is his grama. Cannot find his father Richard who may have been a James Richard Aungst or Henry R Aungst. When John Aungst died in 1911, he left behind 2 sisters who then lived in IN, per his obit.
Notes: Some of the Aungst families came from VA and PA onto Ohio and Iowa and Indianna, etc. Per 1850, Benton IN: Henry Aungst 59, farmer b PA, wife Ann age 47 born VA, with children, William 22 b 1838 VA, John 17 born 1833, and George 8 b IN. Per 1860, Noble/Orange Twp IN: John Aungst age 62 born 1798 VA, carpenter, wife Sarah age 53 born 1807, Margaret 19, born 1841, Daniel age 18, and David age 12.
There were Aungst folks in PA, NY, MA, and CT. Revolutionary Soldier, Nicholas Angst #S39947 of Dauphin Co PA enlisted at Lancaster, and served under Capt. Peter Grubbs. Nicholas was also at Schuykill in 1819 and Pinegrove; with 5 children deceased as well as his wife.
My great grama Mattie Aungst b 1867 Richland Co OH grew up in Wyandot Co Ohio and married Samuel J Robacker; he son of George Jacob Rohrbacher (born 1815 Weingarten Germany; emigrating 1837 to America, died 1894 (married 1840 Sarah Eckert 1820 PA 1883 OH); (lived 1850 PA), of Sandusky City, Erie Co OH. Sam had a brother, John b 1847 and other siblings; some of whom lived in Richland and Fairfield Cos OH. Sarah was likely kin to Elizabeth Eckert b PA who came to Stark Co OH; and likely kin to Dr Marion Eckert.
Samuel and Mattie Aungst Robacker had two children: Ophelia May Robacker (1892 OH 1919 OR) and Avery W. Robacker (1889 OH 1955 OR) who married Anna Laura Reardon. Note: Mattie's mom (Elizabeth Crunkilton Aungst) had sisters, Lydia Crunkilton Myers (Robert), Ophelia J Crunkilton DeJean (Avery W), the latter died 1878, and Mrs. Esther McCurdy.
Ophelia Robacker married May 1, 1912 at Oregon City OR Clackamus Co (William Current, witness), Clinton Ellsworth Black (1886 OH 1973 CA) (my grampa, a Baptist) and had 3 children, as mentioned. Ophelia died age 26, on April 3, 1919, with pneumonia, leaving my grampa Clinton a widower with three children. Ophelia's grama, Elizabeth Crunkilton Aungst died March 29, 1919 the same year and was brought to OH to be buried along side of her husband, John Aungst at Nevada Cem Eden Twp Wyandot Co OH. Grampa Clinton E Black, now a widower, along with his motherless children (Robert C, James W, and Ellen M), sailed the Yankee Doodle lumbership down the Pacific to California to his parents, Frank E and Margaret A Current Black (Frank, born 1863 OH d 1927 CA; Margaret, born 1869 IN d 1932 CA). Margaret was the daughter of Sylvanus (Sylvester) and Alice A (West) Current.
Sylvanus aka Sylvester Current was born at Warren near Trumbull Co OH, as son of Mathew and Elizabeth Current, he born PA of OH onto IN. Sylvanus married twice; Margaret (Maggie) was the daughter of Sylvanus 1833 OH - 1906 IN and (first wife) Alice A (West) Current 1840 OH - 1876 IN. Alice was daughter of Clement Jr and Rhoda (Johnston) West. Clement West Jr was born 1797 NY and died 1873 MI per IN records. Rhoda (his wife) was daughter of William Johnston. Clinton Black remarried 1929 Las Vegas NV, Nana Lois Bresler Biddlecome (d/o Albert and Rachel B Bresler) and had little Nana (Mrs. Joseph Hughs). Frank Black (1863-1927), railroad conductor, was maternal grandson of Henry and Susan Carey Black from Perry County OH onto Hardin Co OH. Frank Black was related to Charles Edward Sleichter (Ed's mom was Elizabeth Black d 1874 w/o John Sleighter/Sliester sp) d 1879; she d/o Henry and Susan Carey Black). Chas Edward Sleichter married Minnie Kennedy/Canaday and had Ray W; Chas (Ed) also worked for the railroad. Frank Black also had a cousin, Mrs. Ruthelle Laughrin of Lima OH whom he visited in the early 1900s. Frank is found in 1870 and 1880 at Hardin Co OH as Frank E Church and grandson of Henry and Susanna Carey Black. There were three females born to Henry and Susanna Carey Black who lived to maturity: Rachel Firestone (James); Elizabeth Sleichter (John); and Matilda Davis (James). On Frank Black's death certificate, it lists his father as James Black; no mother named. It is likely James could be first name of a stepdad; or that his father died in the Civil War and his mother remarried another. It would appear that Frank as F E Church took his mother's or his family name of Black upon maturity. His grampa Henry Black died in 1879; his grama Susanna Carey Black died in 1892. Frank went to California about 1891 (land records and bio).

Dorothea and Anna's mother's maiden name was Fallon. Mother found some old photos of hers tucked away. One pic is of two women. It says on the back of the picture "Mrs. Lizzie (Crunkilton) Aungst (wife of John), sister to Lydia Crunkilton Meyers". Lydia Crunkilton was born 1852 and wife of Robert Myers born 1851 who had two children, Wilson and Louis Myers). Lizzie and Lydia are sisters to Samuel L Crunkilton, Mrs. Esther (James) McCurdy, and Mrs. Ophelia J (Avery) DeJean both d 1878; they being children of Robert C and Jane Wilson Crunkilton. Esther and Ophelia predeceased their father, Robert Crunkilton who died in 1895. Another picture was of John and Lizzie Crunkilton Aungst. In another pic, John and Lizzie Aungst are accompanied by a Ms. Crunkilton. Some of the Crunkiltons went from Richland Co OH to Wyandot Co OH.
These folks were land owners and traveled through and lived in OH SD MT WY PA OR CA, and elsewhere. They were pioneers, goldminers, railroad men, farmers, carpenters, rodeomen, family men, churchgoers, lumbermen, and the backbone of America ~ my ancestors and yours!
