Yes, that is the message that has been scrolling across the top of my genealogy pages at rootsweb since 2001, but on Sep 1, 2009 a new website was created with the same name, WeAreAllRelated.com which coincidently is selling for a huge profit, a subset of the same data which I have always shared for free. They make the following FALSE statement, "BridgeAnne díAvignon made nationwide headlines because she was the first genealogist in the world to discover that the U.S. Presidents are related to one another through a common ancestor." This information was known long before her birth.
The original article states, "Using her grandfather's genealogy database, BridgeAnne d'Avignon, 12, a seventh-grade student at Monte Vista Christian School in Watsonville, has found that every president except eighth president Martin Van Buren is descended from King John of England." And then in the following paragraph, "BridgeAnne believes no one has ever traced presidential ancestries as far back as 1166," yet this information is not at all new.
Many of the republished articles went so far as to call her a genius for her discovery, yet MailOnline reports, "Her 80-year-old grandfather, who has been tracing roots for nearly six decades, helped her make the presidential links." Further down, they wrote, "Prior to díAvignonís discovery, genealogists were only able to link 22 families of presidents, likely because they only focused on male bloodlines," yet that is not at all a true statement.
They also wrote, "The teen also found out that she is the 18th cousin of President Obama. She even wrote to her new-found relative a letter to share her findings with him." It seems odd that a "genius" who made such an amazing "discovery", did not even know that she was a 12th cousin of her president.
