Maria "Mary" (Winter) Klostermann Sturm (1855-1908) was a sister of my great-grandmother, Mrs. Henry Gerken, née Anna Winter, and aunt to my grandfather, Ewald Gerken. Mary married Caspar Klostermann (1848-1878), and they had three children. Caspar Klostermann died, and Mary then married Jacob Sturm (1841-1905), whose first spouse, Elizabeth née Knolle (1844-1877), had also died. Jacob brought five children from his first marriage into his union with Mary, and they proceeded to have seven additional children of their own. The Sturm family lived at Springbrook, Iowa, where they farmed.   T.L.

Mary (Winter) Klostermann Sturm
The date of Mary's birth as May 1, 1855, comes from a note made in a New Vienna church book, although the handwriting of May looks like it could be Mar; the 1900 U.S. Census does have her birth occurring in May 1855. A reading of her gravestone appearing online at http://ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com/pub/usgenweb/ia/jackson/cemeteries/swpa.txt gives her year of birth as 1856. Her birthplace of Dubuque, Iowa, comes from an obituary for her, and that is the place where her parents were living in 1855, and the 1860, 1880, and 1900 censuses all have Mary being born in Iowa. Only the 1870 census varies; it has a Mary Winter, and presumably the same Mary Winter written about here, working as a domestic servant in the household of George and Anna M. (Winter) Meinhart, at New Vienna, Iowa, but her age is listed as 17, which would place her year of birth as circa 1853, and her birthplace as Hesse Nassau, in Germany, from where the Winter family hailed.
Maria "Mary" Anna Winter was born on May 1, 1855, to John Peter and Anna Maria (Ickenroth) Winter in Dubuque, Iowa. In 1854, the Winters had arrived in Dubuque, Iowa, from St. Louis, Missouri, after landing in the U.S. on May 30 of that year. Mary had two sisters, Anna Winter and Anna Mary Winter, the latter being a niece of John P. and Anna Winter who was adopted by them. The Winter family moved from Dubuque to New Vienna, Iowa, in 1864.

Marries Caspar Klostermann.
Mary Winter married Caspar Klostermann on December 23, 1873. Caspar Klostermann was born on January 2, 1848, son of John and Maria (Krumpelbeck) Klostermann of New Vienna, Iowa. His parents came to America and settled north of New Vienna, Iowa, in 1846. (Caspar's full name as it reads on his gravestone is Johannes Kasper Klostermann; his name was also variously spelled as Casper.) Caspar and Mary (Winter) Klostermann lived at Luxemburg, Iowa.

Born to Caspar and Mary Klostermann were three children, Franziska Klostermann, Caecilia Klostermann, and Joseph Klostermann. Franziska, born November 27, 1874, died an infant less than two months later on January 23, 1875. Caecilia, or Celia, was their only child to survive to adulthood. Joseph also died an infant: he was born a month and half following the death of his father Caspar, on December 23, 1878, and died about five months later, on May 21, 1879.

Death of Caspar Klostermann.
Caspar Klostermann died on November 9, 1878, at the age of 30 years, 10 months, and 7 days, and he was buried on November 11, 1878, at Luxemburg, Iowa, in Holy Trinity Cemetery. His gravestone gives his full name as Johannes Kasper Klostermann and incorrectly gives the year of his death as 1888. He shares his headstone with that of his two children that died as infants.

Widow marries Jacob Sturm.

Jacob Sturm
Mary (Winter) Klostermann married Jacob Sturm, a widower, on December 30, 1879, and they settled in Jackson County, Iowa, at Springbrook. Jacob Sturm was born April 9, 1841, at Dahlen, Nassau, Germany, and emigrated to the United States in the spring of 1867. Jacob located in Bellevue, Iowa, and for a while worked as a farm hand in Tete des Morts Township (St. Donatus, Iowa). There he met Elizabeth Knolle, and they were married on April 26, 1869, by the Reverend Theodore M. Schiffmacher at St. Joseph's Church in Bellevue. Jacob and Elizabeth Sturm had five children.

Heritage of Elizabeth (Knolle) Sturm.
Elizabeth Knolle was born on April 17, 1844, to John Knolle, from Haneberg, Hanover, and Anna (Hannah) Adelaide Brummer, from Lengerich, Hanover. Her father died on October 6, 1871, at age 62, and her mother died on October 1, 1862, at age 54. Hoffman's Centennial History of the Archdiocese of Dubuque (1938) lists the Knolle family as among the first to settle in the St. Donatus area and establish the church there. The 1860 Census lists their children as Caroline, Elizabeth, Mary, Henry Marcus, and a daughter three years younger than Henry Marcus (aged 15, 11, 8, 7, and 4, respectively.) From Hoffman: "Even before the dedicatory services took place, the first baptism on record was administered in the new church to Anna Marie (Mary) Knolle by Father Michels, June 26, 1851."

Born to Jacob and Elizabeth Sturm were John Sturm, Mary Sturm, Chris Sturm, Adam Sturm, and Theodore Sturm.

Elizabeth (Knolle) Sturm, 33, dies.
Elizabeth Sturm died on December 20, 1877, in Bellevue, Iowa, from complications following the birth of her son Teddy, and her sister, Mrs. Kegler, then cared for the baby. Elizabeth Sturm was buried in the Springbrook cemetery.

After Elizabeth's death, Jacob Sturm returned to the old country and spent about a year and a half there before returning to America. During this period he engaged briefly in the brewery business with a Mr. Metzger in Bellevue.

Jacob Sturm marries Mary (Winter) Klostermann.
On December 30, 1879, Jacob Sturm married Mary (Winter) Klostermann, a widow from New Vienna, Iowa, with a surviving daughter, Caecilia, from her first marriage.

Jacob and Mary Sturm had seven children of their own together: Joseph "Joe" Sturm, Henry Sturm, Aloysius "Louie" Sturm, Peter Sturm, Anna "Annie" Sturm, Appolonia "Lonie" Sturm, and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Sturm.

The 1880 U.S. Census has the Sturm (with the last name spelled as Storm) household in Jackson Township, Jackson County, Iowa, consisting of Jacob Sturm, age 38, farmer, born in Nassau; his wife Mary, age 25, keeping house, born in Iowa; Mary, daughter, age 8; Celia, daughter, age 4; Christ, son, age 6; Adam, age 4; and Catherine, age 2. The relationship to the head of the household is not given for the last two children, although Adam was a son of Jacob's from his first marriage; one can only speculate about the identity of Catherine at this point: Was she another daughter of Mary's from her first marriage? Was this a mistake on the part of the census taker? Also, both John (who would have been about age 10) and Theodore (who would have been age 2), Jacob's oldest and youngest sons from his first marriage, are noticeably absent in this census.

The 1900 U.S. Census has the Sturm household in Jackson Township, Jackson County, Iowa, consisting of Jacob Sturm, born April 1841, age 59, farmer, born in Germany; his wife Mary, born May 1855, age 45, born in Iowa; and their children, all born in Iowa, Christ, son, born December 1874, age 25, farm laborer; Joseph, son, born May 1881, age 19, farm laborer; Henry, son, born August 1883, age 16, farm laborer; Louis, son, born July 1885, age 14, farm laborer; Annie, daughter, born June 1889, age 10, at school; Lena [misspelling of Lonia?], daughter, born September 1893, age 7, at school; and Elizabeth, daughter, born August 1895, age 4, at school.

The Sturms farmed in Jackson Township, Jackson County, Iowa, and their farm adjoined the town of Springbrook, Iowa.

Detail from 1913 plat of Jackson Township, Jackson County, Iowa, showing the Sturm farm, now at 192 acres, southwest of Springbrook, Iowa, which had by then been passed into the hands of Jacob and Mary's son Henry and his wife Cora.

In 1978, Cora Sturm, 90, daughter-in-law of Jacob Sturm, related these stories.
Jacob was a hard-working man, well-liked, and a good singer. He sang at wedding receptions at the Springbrook church. Sometimes Henry, his son, would accompany him on the violin. When Cora and Henry were dating, she can remember riding in the buggy and hearing Jacob sing his German songs as they drove past the Church. Jacob and Mr. Weinschenk would tease, saying that is was a fine wedding, but nothing compared to the one that Cora and Henry would have. Unfortunately, by the time the wedding took place on November 19, 1907, both fathers had passed away.

On one occasion, Cora and her father were driving along the road, and Jacob was walking to church. On the previous night, a storm had struck, which caused much crop damage to the corn. Mr. Weinschenk asked Jacob if he was going to clean up the field, and Jacob answered, "What the storm blew down, the Sturm won't pick up."

Jacob Sturm, 63, dies.
After a short illness, Jacob Sturm passed away at his home near Springbrook, Iowa, last Thursday, March 2, 1905, of pneumonia. Jacob Sturm was a native of Dahlen, Nassau, Germany, where he was born in the year 1841, and in the spring of 1867 started for America. He located in Bellevue and for a time engaged as a farm employee in Tete des Morts Township and in the year 1869 was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Knolle who preceded him to the grave in the year 1877. To this union fine children were born. After his wife's death he returned to the old country and spent about one year and a half before returning to America. In 1879 he was again united in marriage, to a widow lady of New Vienna, Mrs. Mary Klosterman, who survives him. To this union seven children were born, five of whom are living. During all these years of residence in Jackson County, Mr. Sturm had been engaged in farming, excepting a short period spent in Bellevue, where he was engaged with a Mr. Metzger in the brewery business. The funeral occurred from SS. Peter and Paul Church in Springbrook last Sunday, March 5th.

* = Mary and Jacob Sturm together were natural parents to seven children, but Mary also had three children with her first husband Caspar Klostermann, and she was stepmother to Jacob Sturm's five children from his first marriage with Elizabeth Knolle.
** = This news article failed to mention that she was also survived by Celia, her daughter from her first marriage with Caspar Klostermann, and by her stepchildren John, Mary, Chris, Adam, and Teddy.
*** = Her year of marriage to Jacob Sturm in the article was given as 1880, but according to a New Vienna church book, Mary and Jacob were married on December 30, 1879.

The farm and household possessions were sold, and the inheritance divided up among the children, each receiving three thousand dollars. Their son Henry and his wife Cora bought the farm and lived there for 30 years.

Sister Mira Mosle, the director of communications for the order, said "I remember when people would come to our house they were always fascinated by that painting. They would look to find how things had changed in the scene over the years." Joseph Walter, whose oil and water color paintings once graced many Dubuque homes and churches, was an Austrian immigrant who painted Dubuque-area scenery, still-life scenes, religious figures, and portraits of people. In 1962, Walter's family sold many of his artworks, and Anne and Art Mosle, who loved his paintings, bought three oils and four watercolors. They included depictions of Catfish Creek, a peasant woman on wash day, a Madonna and child, a young, fair-haired girl in a blue dress reading in front of lace curtains (Girl on Window), and the Mount Carmel view, which was honored with a prominent position in the Mosle living room for nearly 40 years. "We always said this belongs at Mount Carmel someday," said Anne Mosle, who recently decided to give the painting to the sisters, "and when Mira joined the BVMs, that was the frosting on the cake. We lived close to that beautiful painting every day and enjoyed it very much, but it should be nowhere else but at Mount Carmel."
