The Ancestral Lineage of Faber and Jeanette (Timmerman) Runde
The Wiederhold-Lange Lineages
The Wiederholt Family Heritage

Researched and written by
Tom Larson

My wife Deb descends from the Wiederhold family of Kefferhausen, a German village that today is in the district of Eichsfeld in the state of Thuringia. During the nineteenth century, Kefferhausen was within the Kingdom of Saxony, in an area which itself would become part of Prussia. Kefferhausen fell within the boundaries of East Germany in the post-World War II era.
The initial source of information for Generations 1 to 4 of the Wiederholds in Germany was Frank Scarbarth, whose online ancestry for his wife Simone at http://www.scarbarth.de/index2.htm (offsite link) includes the Wiederhold family of Kefferhausen. Frank verified that Christian Wiederholt, who emigrated from Germany to the United States, was indeed a son of Carolus Joseph and Margarita Victoria (Eckart) Wiederhold--known in other online genealogies as Karl and Viktoria (Eckart) Wiederhold--who in turn are listed on his webpage. His information was subsequently supplemented by Gerhard's Weidemann & Schade (offsite link) genealogy online at Rootsweb.com.
Weidemann & Schade was also the source of information for Christian and M. Catharina Josepha (Müller) Wiederhold, Generation 5 of the Wiederholds. In turn Gerhard's source of information as listed was Norbert Degenhart's 2006 volume, Familienbuch der katholischen Pfarrgemeinde Bickenriede, 1673-1886. As the title indicates, that book evidently contains family information from the Catholic parish in Bickeriede covering the years 1673 to 1886. Christian Wiederhold, who was born in Kefferhausen, had moved to Bickenriede, the home of his wife Catharina Müller, and it was there that their children were born. Bickenreide, although only a short few miles or kilometers from Kefferhausen, today is found in the adjacent district of Unstrut-Hainich in Thuringia.
Christian Wiederhold and his family, including his son Johannes Joseph Wiederhold and his wife Victoria née Lange (whose own family heritage is traced to Bickenriede), emigrated to the United States in 1846, and information concerning them and their descendants' lives in the United States is also compiled here. The Wiederholds settled in Grant County in southwestern Wisconsin, where the family surname would become Wiederholt.
Sources of information for Victoria Lange's German heritage in Bickenriede include The Family History of Georg Lange and Barbara Fedeler and Their Descendants, by Fr. Ron Lange, S.V.D., (the Carnegie-Stout Public Library in Dubuque, Iowa, has two copies of this genealogy), herein referred to as Lange's volume; Steven C.'s Wehling (offsite link) Rootsweb WorldConnect site; and, again, Gerhard's Weidemann & Schade (offsite link) Rootsweb WorldConnect site. Many of the Lange family also found their way to the area of Grant County, Wisconsin; and Fr. Ron Lange's volume was a major source of information for them.
Dave Halm's Haverhill, Marshall County, Iowa; Menominee, JoDaviess Co. Illinois; Grant Co. Wisconsin: Kreis Lingen, Hanover, plus more (offsite link) Rootsweb WorldConnect site provided the guideposts for further tracing these families once they arrived in America.
Further sources include articles and obituaries from the Dubuque Telegraph Herald, available on microfilm at the Carnegie-Stout Public Library in Dubuque, Iowa; readings of gravestones at Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery in Kieler, Wisconsin, and Holy Ghost Church Cemetery in Dickeyville, Wisconsin; U.S. Census records for Grant County, Wisconsin, also available on microfilm at the Dubuque library; the social security death index at Rootsweb.com; and other sources as may be noted within the text.

    Wiederholt: Generation 5

    Great-great-great-great-grandparents of Deb (Runde) Larson:
Christian and M. Catharina Josepha (Müller) Wiederhold

Christianus Wiederhold was born on March 18, 1794, in Kefferhausen (Eichsfeld, Thuringia, Germany), son of Carolus Joseph and Margarita Victoria (Eckart) Wiederhold. He was christened on March 18 in Kefferhausen. Christian Wiederhold married Maria Catharina Josepha Müller on February 11, 1822, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bickenriede (Unstrut-Hainich, Thuringia, Germany). Catharina Müller was born on October 13, 1800, in Bickenriede, daughter of Johannes Martin and Catharina Franzisca (Degenhart) Müller (offsite link)*.
    * = see Weidemann & Schade for additional information.
    * = see also R. Burr's Landkreis Eichsfeld (offsite link) for Catharina Franzisca (Degenhart) Müller's ancestry.
Christian Wiederhold's occupation in Germany was that of Mühlenmeister (millmaster), in Anrode, and also a Schreiner (cabinetmaker).
Christianus, his wife, M. Catharina Josepha, their children, including their son John Joseph and his wife Victoria née Lange, arrived in America from Germany at the Port of New Orleans on the brig Tuskar on May 29, 1846. The passenger list has the family listed as Christ Wiederhold, age 54, Josepha Wiederhold, 46; Victoria Wiederhold, 22; John. Jos. Wiederhold, 21; Mar. Cath. Wiederhold, 19; Anna Marg Wiederhold, 16; Carl Jos. Wiederhold, 18; John. Valens Wiederhold, 11; Mar. Josepha Wiederhold, 8; Regine Wiederhold, 5; and Victoria Wiederhold, 22.* The occupation for all was given as miller. Catharina's brother Christoph Müller, his wife M. Theresia né Pfeil, and daughter M. Elisabeth had evidently emigrated from Germany to the United States ten years earlier, in 1836, and having them, as well as other townpeople from Bickeriede and the surrounding area, gave the Wiederholds the encouragement to also make the long journey to America.
    * = Between the last two names on the list appeared Tr?dr. Brand, 26, miller, who originated from the same place as the Wiederholds (Bickenriede), and this may have been daughter Victoria Wiederhold's future husband, Andreas Brand [Andrew Brandt].

From New Orleans, the family made their way up the Mississippi River, to southwestern Wisconsin, where they settled at Sinsinawa, in Hazel Green Township, Grant County. In the United States the family name would become Wiederholt, with a t at the end of the name in place of the d.

Catharina (Müller) Wiederhold died on July 5, 1863. Christian Wiederhold died on June 21, 1864. They were buried in Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery at Kieler, Wisconsin.

Children of Christian and Catharina (Müller) Wiederhold:

    1. Johannes Joseph Wiederhold was born on September 2, 1822, in Bickenriede, son of Christian and M. Catharina Josepha (Müller) Wiederhold. Johannes Joseph Wiederhold married Victoria Lange on February 22, 1846, in Bickenriede, and they emigrated to the United States that same year.

    2. Victoria Wiederhold was born on December 7, 1824, in Bickenriede, daughter of Christian and M. Catharina Josepha (Müller) Wiederhold. She emigrated with her parents and siblings to the United States in 1846. Victoria Wiederholt married Andreas Brand on June 28, 1846, at Sinsinawa, Wisconsin. Andreas Brand was born on July 5, 1819, in Bickenriede, son of Johann Valentin and Christina (Wolff) Brand. Andreas likely was on the same ship that brought the Wiederholds to the United States in 1846. Johannes Adam Richardt was a Handelsmann, a merchant; Tagelöhner, a day worker; and Handarbeiter, a hand worker.
      * = Lange's volume has date of birth as July 18; if so, July 19 might be a christening date.
** = surname also variously spelled as Richard or Richart.
Margaretha (Lange) Richardt died on September 19, 1850, in Bickenriede, and she was buried on September 20. Johannes Adam Richardt died on December 1, 1888, in Bickenriede, of pneumonia.

    2. Adam Valentin Lange* was born on April 1, 1816, in Bickenriede, son of Johannes Adam and Anna M. Apollonia (Böttger) Lange. He was christened on April 2, 1816. Adam Valentine was a werkmeister, which translates literally as work master.
      * = Lange's volume has name as Johann Valentin Adam Lange.
Adam Valentin Lange married Maria Catharina Ludwig on February 5, 1843, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bickenriede. Maria Catharina Ludwig was born on November 7, 1820, in Bickenriede, daughter of Johannes and [?] Ludwig.
Adam Valentin and Maria Catharina (Ludwig) Lange had four children, all born at Bickenriede: Maria Josepha; Longinus; Peter; and Eleanora (born August 25, 1854, died October 20, 1854).
Maria Catharina (Ludwig) Lange died on August 23, 1854, in Bickenriede, of cholera, and she was buried on August 25.
Adam Valentin Lange married Josepha Gaßmann [Gassmann] on June 13, 1855, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bickenriede. Josepha Gaßmann was born on December 21, 1829, daughter of Anton Siegfried and Katharina (Werner) Gaßmann. Josepha's youngest siblings were born in Bickeriede, but she and two other siblings may have been born in Freienghagen as at the time of their births their father Anton was a school teacher at that place.
Adam and Josepha (Gaßmann) Lange had the following children born at Bickenriede: Theodor; Hermann; and Johannes Norbert. Those children, and Longinus, Adam's son from his first marriage, emigrated to the United States with Adam and Josepha Lange, where they arrived in New York City on October 2, 1862, on the ship St. Bernhard. They settled in Jamestown Township in Grant County, Wisconsin, where they had two more children: Joseph A. and John C.
Josepha (Gassmann) Lange died on May 31, 1892, at Louisburg, Wis., and she was buried on June 3 in Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery at Kieler, Wis.
J.V. Adam Lange died on September 29, 1895, in Jamestown Township, Grant Co., Wis., and he was buried on October 3 in Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery at Kieler, Wis.

Children of J.V. Adam Lange and M. Catharina (Ludwig) Lange:

      • Maria Josepha Lange was born on May 18, 1845, in Bickenriede, daughter of J.V. Adam Lange and M. Catharina (Ludwig) Lange. She was christened the same day at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bickenriede.
Maria Josepha Lange, age 5, died on August 23, 1850, in Bickenriede, of cholera, and she was buried on August 25.

      • Longinus Lange was born on March 12, 1849, in Bickenriede, son of J.V. Adam Lange and M. Catharina (Ludwig) Lange. He was christened on March 14 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bickenriede. Longinus, age 13, came to America in 1862 with his father and stepmother, J.V. Adam Lange and Josepha (Gaßmann) Lange. The family settled in Jamestown Township, Grant County, Wisconsin.
In the 1880 U.S. Census, Longinus Lange, age 31, was listed in his father's household, with his occupation given as wagon maker.
Longinus Lange married Katy Henk on May 22, 1883, at Immaculate Conception Church in Kieler, Wisconsin. Katy, a diminutive of her given name Katharina, was born on March 12, 1837. She had been married previously, and evidently was widowed from a Jansen. In the 1880 census, she was listed as head of her household in Jamestown Township, as Catharine Janssen, age 43, born in Holland, with father born in Holland and mother born in Germany, occupation keeping saloon, with three children, Mary Ann, age 18, teaching school; William, age 15, blacksmithing; and Josephine, age 8, at school.
Longinus and Katharina's marriage only lasted until January 23, 1886, when Katharina died. She was buried in Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery at Kieler, Wisconsin.
Longinus Lange moved to western Iowa, where he married Anna Jonas on May 16, 1893, in Woodbury County, Iowa. Anna Jonas was born on March 4, 1870, in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, daughter of Michael and Elisabeth (Sternback) Jonas.
Longinus and Anna Lange had the following children: Norbert, Odelia, Barbara, Margaret, Joseph, John, and Christina. There was also a son Edwin/Edward (born October 1891 in Nebraska) who was listed in the 1900 census as a stepson to Longinus, so Anna, it appears, had a previous marriage; Edwin's father was listed as being born in Nebraska and his mother in Wisconsin.
In 1900 the Lange family were living in Stanton Township in Plymouth County, Iowa, where Longinus was listed as a small farmer in that year's census. In 1910 the family were living in Logan, Phelps County, Nebraska.
Longinus Lange, 71, died on September 20, 1920. Anna (Jonas) Lange died in 1926*. They were buried in Saint Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Osmond, Pierce County, Nebraska.
            * = According to Pierce County, St. Marys Catholic @ Osmond at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nepierce/osmondc.htm, although Sterling/Letellier/Smith/Phillips has a source note stating year of death is incorrect on gravestone and should be 1927.
The source of information for the marriage of Longinus Lange and Anna Jonas, his second wife, and their children, was Kimberly's Sterling/Letellier/Smith/Phillips at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=azgnilrets2.

      • Peter Lange was born on March 24, 1852, in Bickenriede, son of J.V. Adam Lange and M. Catharina (Ludwig) Lange. He was christened on March 25 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bickenriede.
Peter Lange, three days old, died on March 27, 1852, in Bickenriede, and he was buried on March 29.

      • Eleanora Lange was born on August 25, 1854, in Bickenriede, daughter of J.V. Adam Lange and M. Catharina (Ludwig) Lange. She was christened on August 26 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bickenriede.
Eleanora Lange, eight weeks old, died on October 20, 1854, in Bickenriede, and she was buried on October 22.

Children of J.V. Adam Lange and Josepha (Gaßmann) Lange:

      • Theodore Lange was born on October 21, 1852,* in Bickenriede, son of J.V. Adam Lange and Josepha (Gaßmann) Lange. Theodore was 10 years old when he arrived in America with his parents Adam and Josepha and brothers Longinus, Herman, and Norbert. The family settled in Jamestown Township, Grant County, Wisconsin.
        * = Theodore's birthdate of Oct. 21, 1852, as given at Weidemann ∓ Schade, does not figure correctly with being a son of Adam Valentin and Josepha (Gaßmann) Lange, since they were not married until June 13, 1855.
If Theodore's birthdate is correct, it seems more likely that Theodore was a son of Josepha (Gaßmann) Lange from a first marriage of hers, and that he became Adam Lange's stepson.
U.S. Census data is inconclusive: Theodore Lange's age in 1870 is given as age 14, which means he would have been born ca. 1855-1856; in 1880, age 25, born ca.1854-1855. He may have been counted twice in 1880, once in his father's household and then again in John Hugo's household, as a laborer, age 28, born ca. 1851-1852. There is also a Theodore Lange in his own household in 1900, age 45, born in September 1854, presumably the same Theodore Lange, although Lange's volume has Theodore dying in 1896.
Lange's volume also surmises that Theodore was Adam's son Peter from his first marriage, who was born on March 24, 1852, although the concession is made that a Peter Lange did die on March 27, 1852, in Bickenriede and was buried on March 29. Ron Lange's volume has Theodore Lange dying on March 27, 1896, in Jamestown township, Grant Co., Wis., and being buried on March 29 in Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery at Kieler, Wis.

      • Herman Lange was born on April 3, 1857, in Bickenriede, son of J.V. Adam Lange and Josepha (Gaßmann) Lange. He was christened on April 5 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bickenriede. Herman was five years old when he arrived in America with his parents Adam and Josepha and brothers Longinus, Theodore, and Norbert. The family settled in Jamestown Township, Grant County, Wisconsin.
Herman Lange married Anna Weinrich on April 22, 1891, at Immaculate Conception Church in Kieler, Wisconsin. Anna Weinrich was born in 1865 in Mühlhausen, Germany, daughter of Jakob and Christina Weinrich. They had a son, Adam Henry Lange (born May 29, 1894, Wis.).
Herman Lange died on March 22, 1927, at Hazel Green, Wisconsin, and he was buried on March 24 in Holy Ghost Church Cemetery at Dickeyville, Wisconsin.
Anna (Weinrich) Lange died on November 11, 1937, at Shullsburg, Wisconsin, and she was buried in Holy Ghost Church Cemetery at Dickeyville, Wisconsin.

      • Johann Norbert Lange was born on February 16, 1862, in Bickenriede, son of J.V. Adam Lange and Josepha (Gaßmann) Lange. He was christened on February 17 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bickenriede.
Norbert was just eight months old when he arrived in America with his parents Adam and Josepha and brothers Longinus, Theodore, and Herman, but it appears Norbert died before the family reached their destination in southwestern Wisconsin.

      • Joseph Adam Lange was born on April 30, 1865, in Jamestown Township, Grant Co., Wis., son of J.V. Adam Lange and Josepha (Gaßmann) Lange. He was christened on May 1 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Kieler, Wisconsin.
Joseph Lange married Anna Rebecca Digmann on November 19, 1889, at Immaculate Conception Church in Kieler. Anna Digmann was born on May 23, 1872, in Wisconsin, daughter of Johann Heinrich and Theresa Maria (Weinerich) Digmann.
Joseph and Anna Lange lived in Jamestown Township, Grant County, Wisconsin, and they had the following children:
        • Theresa Lange, born May 31, 1891, Sinsinawa, Wis.; died June 26, 1950, Sinsinawa; buried at Sinsinawa; spouse Clement Puls, born Dec. 13, 1879, Lancaster, Wis., parents Heinrich Gerhard and Catherine (Exeler) Puls; died Dec. 28, 1973; buried Sinsinawa.

        • August H. Lange, born Apr. 21, 1895.

Shortly after their marriage, Johannes Joseph and Victoria Wiederhold emigrated to the United States, where they arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana, on May 29, 1846, on the brig Tuskar. Also on the ship were his parents and brothers and sisters. In the United States, Johannes (anglicized to John) Joseph Wiederhold was known by his second given name of Joseph, and the family surname became Wiederholt. Joseph J. and Victoria Wiederholt settled in Jamestown Township, Grant County, in southwestern Wisconsin.

He was reared on the old homestead, and educated in the common schools of the neighborhood. Trained at an early age to habits of industry and economy, he thus became fitted for the future battle with the world, and has entered upon a career which there is every reason to believe will in due time place him among the leading men of this section.
Eleven days before reaching his twenty-second year our subject was united in marriage with Miss Catherine, daughter of Valentine and Margaret (Owery) Digmann, the wedding taking place at the home of the bride, in Wisconsin, Jan. 18, 1880. ... [Her] father [Valentine] departed this life at the homestead in Jamestown, in 1879, aged seventy-three years. The mother [Margaret] makes her home with her daughter Catherine.
The farm belonging to our subject embraces 280 acres of valuable land, and occupies a portion of sections 28 and 29. When he purchased this, which was in the fall of 1880, the only improvement on it was an old log-house. He has now a fine, large frame dwelling, with a barn 36x80 feet, corn-cribs, and all the other necessary out-buildings. ... He engages considerably in stock-raising, keeping good grades of horses and cattle, and making a specialty of Poland-China swine. He and his estimable wife are the parents of five children, namely: John Valentine, Mary Catherine, Maggie Rosa, George Joseph, and Ellen Gertrude. The family are all members of the Catholic Church ...

Deluge swamps southwest Wisconsin; Rain might have played role in death of farmer.
Weekend rains could have contributed to the drowning death of a farmer in rural Cuba City, Wis., while swelling tri-state-area creeks and rivers well beyond their banks. Anthony P. Timmerman was located after an extensive search and recovery operation by the Grant County dive team. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Grant County Coroner's Office.
Authorities believe water backing into the farm might have indirectly contributed to Timmerman's death. The Grant County Sheriff's Department has not yet released details of the accident, but a National Weather Service report of floodwater impacts suggests Timmerman fell into a holding tank he was trying to repair because of nearby flood waters.
