The Timmerman Family Heritage

Jacob and Mary (Timmermans) Bertjens

Mary (Timmermans) Bertjens (1846-1927) was a sister of my wife Deb's great-great-grandfather Mathias Timmermans (lineage at right). Both Mathias and Mary, as well as other members of their family, came to America from the Limburg province of the Netherlands. Mary (Timmermans) Bertjens with husband Jacob Bertjens (1847-1928) and young children initially settled at Menominee in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, before moving just to the north to Jamestown Township in Grant County, Wisconsin.    T.L.

Anna Maria Hubertina Timmermans was born February 29, 1848,* in Horn, Limburg, Netherlands, daughter of Petrus and Clara (Engels) Timmermans. Maria Anna Hubertina Timmermans, a dienstmeid, married Jakob Bertjens, a dienstknecht, on April 28, 1873, in Horn, Limburg, Netherlands. Jakob Bertjens was born on September 16, 1847,** in Horn, Limburg, Netherlands, son of Christiaan and Anne Catharinne [Catharina] (Catharina Hendrikx [Hendrix]) Bertjens..
    * = February 29, 1848, according to the database at http://www.genlias.nl/; August 1848, according to the 1900 U.S. Census; 1846, according to readings of her gravestone.
** = September 16, 1846, according to his birth record and marriage record in the database at http://www.genlias.nl/; September 1846, according to the 1900 U.S. Census; September 6, 1847, according to an online genealogy; 1847, according to a reading of his gravestone.

At Horn were born four children to Jacob and Mary Bertjens: Catharina Hubertina (born Feb. 8, 1874; died at Horn June 5, 1874); Peter Mathis Hubert (born March 28, 1875); Christina Catharina (born April 12, 1877); and Clara Catharina (born Nov. 5, 1878).

In 1880, Jacob and Mary Bertjens emigrated to the United States, and the family first settled in Menominee Township, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, where five more children were born: John (born March 1881); Mathias Hubert (born Oct. 1, 1882); Catherine A. "Katie" (born Oct. 1885); Jacob (born Sept. 1887); and Frank (born Apr. 1892). By 1910 the family had moved to Jamestown Township in Grant County, Wisconsin. It seems likely Jacob and Mary also had a son named Willie (born Jan. 26, 1890).

Of their children Peter Bertjens married Nellie Olson; Clara Bertjens married Edward Wiederholt; John Bertjens married Christina Thor; Mathias Bertjens married Anna Catherine Van De Wiel; Catherine Bertjens married Joseph Dreessens; Jacob Bertjens married Kunigunda Decher; and Frank Bertjens married Madeline Brandt. Both Peter Bertjens and John Bertjens changed their surname from Bertjens to Badger.

Mary Bertjens died in 1927. Jacob Bertjens died on December 4, 1928. They were buried in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Cemetery at Kieler, Wisconsin.

The Bertjens family first settled in Menominee Township in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, before moving on to Jamestown Township in Grant County, Wisconsin.
      * = one source has his full name as Peter Mathis Hubert Bertjens.
Peter Bertjens married Nellie Olson on August 1, 1899, in Grant County, Wisconsin. Nellie was born on October 5, 1878, in Sweden, daughter of John and Anna (Larson)* Olson. Nellie was 7 years of age when she came to the United States.
      * = Her maiden name is given as Larson in an online posting by Mitchell Trier, but, as pointed out in a response by Judy Baouab to the posting, Scandinavian custom would have made her surname Larsdotter (Lars's daughter, not Lars's son), and she would have been known by that name even after marriage; and only upon coming to America would her surname become Olson, that of her husband's.

A.B. Lippe's date of birth is given as January 3, 1900, and date of death is given as June 23, 1953, in an online posting by Mitchell Trier at http://www.jenforum.org/badger/messages/860.html. As far as the date of death is concerned: In both Peter and Nellie Badger's Telegraph Herald obituaries, in 1964 and 1969 respectively, both Peter and Nellie are cited as being survived by "Mrs. A.B. (Mae) Lippe," and typically if the husband's name was included in a Telegraph Herald obituary, that meant he also was alive at the time.
FindAGrave.com has a listing for the burial of Alvin B. Lippe in Grand Lawn Cemetery, in Detroit, Michigan (Plot: Section 21), but unfortunately does not include a date of birth or death; it does include a reading from a military plaque for him as "IOWA PVT HQ CO 312 INFANTRY WORLD WAR I."

      • Donald Bertjens was born and died a son of Mathias and Anna (Van De Wiel) Bertjens.

The obituary for Walter Bertjens cites Walter as being preceded in death by "two brothers, Albertus and an infant brother, Donald"; however, it should be noted that an obituary for Francis Bertjens cites him as being preceded in death by "four brothers, Walter, Albertus, Donald and an infant brother," which makes it a possibility that Donald and the infant son are not the same person. The obituary for Francis seems to be copying wording from their sister Evelyn Northaus's obituary from the previous year.
