| Henry Uthe (1831-1920) and his wife Margaretha née Helbing (1839-1895) farmed at Dickeyville, Wisconsin. Henry Uthe was a half-brother of Frank Uthe, my great-great-grandfather, who also lived at Dickeyville. T.L. | ||
Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Franz Uthe was born on December 13, 1831, in Heyerode, Mühlhausen, in Germany, son of Jakob and Anna Elisabeth (Mainzer) Uthe. Known by the third of his four given names, Henry Uthe married Margaretha Helbing. Margaretha was born on April 5, 1835. According to the 1870 and 1880 U.S. censuses, Margaretha was born in Prussia, as was Henry.
Henry and Margaretha Uthe had two children, John and Anna, both of whom were born in Wisconsin, in 1860 and 1868, respectively.
Henry and Margaretha farmed at Dickeyville, Wisconsin, in Paris Township of Grant County. The 1870 U.S. census has the Uthe household in Paris Township consisting of Henry, age 34, farmer; his wife Margaretta, age 33, keeping house; son John, age 10; and daughter Anna, age 1. The 1880 U.S. census has the Uthe household consisting of Henry, age 46, farmer; his wife Margaret, age 43, keeping house; son John, age 19, works on farm; and daughter Anna, age 11, at home.
Margaretha Uthe died on March 5, 1895, in Paris Township, Grant County, Wisconsin. She was buried in Holy Ghost Catholic Church Cemetery in Dickeyville, Wisconsin.
In 1900, the widower Henry Uthe was listed in a household by himself in Paris Township. Five years later the Wisconsin census has Henry and his son John listed in the household of Henry and Caroline Helbing. Henry Helbing was a nephew of Margaretha Uthe. His father was John Helbing, a brother of Margaretha.
Henry Uthe died in 1920. He was buried in Holy Ghost Catholic Church Cemetery in Dickeyville, Wisconsin.

Heather Abrahamson notes the following at her website about Arthur and Anna (Richard) McClain, which she attributes to Delores Gehrke: "Annie Richart McClain's parents were Catholic. She and Arthur ran off and got married when Anna was 16. Her folks made them get married again in the church. They also had money when they married. He bought her fur coats and lots of clothes. He bought a farm and started buying cattle by getting loans at the bank. Then the market crashed and the banks wanted their money. They lost everything. Viola McClain moved in with a family to do maid work."
