| George Kieler (1845-1931) was a brother of my great-great-grandmother Barbara (Kieler) Uthe. George Kieler married Dorothea Montag (1849-1927), and they lived in Jamestown Township in Grant County, Wisconsin, and the village of Kieler received the family name when George established the first post office there. T.L. | ||
George Kieler was born on September 20, 1845, in Germany, son of Johannes and Katharina Kieler. He came to America with his parents via Quebec in 1855 at the age of 10 and moved to Wisconsin to settle in Jamestown Township, Grant County. George Kieler was partly educated in Germany, and had a few years' instruction in the district school in Jamestown. He learned the trade of shoemaker in East Dubuque and worked at it while he was a young man.
George Kieler and Dorothea Montag wed.
On July 2, 1871, George Kieler married Dorothea Julianna Montag at Immaculate Conception Church in Kieler, Wisconsin, with the Reverend Father Schraudenbach officiating. Dorothy was born on April 16, 1849, daughter of Karl Hans "Charles" and Maria Anna (Kellner) Montag at Küllstedt, Kreis Eichsfeld, Thüringen, Pruessen. Both the Kielers and Montags had come on the same ship to America, and it was on the ship that the ten-year-old George first encountered the person who would become his future wife, Dorothea Montag, then age six. The Montags, like the Kielers, settled in Jamestown Township in Grant County, Wisconsin.
Born to George and Dorothea (Montag) Kieler were Catherine Kieler, William Kieler, Henry Kieler, Lawrence Kieler, Charles Kieler, Maria Kieler, Louisa Kieler, Arthur Kieler, Margareth Kieler, Agatha Kieler, and Mathilda Kieler. Maria died at 15 months of age, and Arthur and Margareth evidently died as infants.
George and Dorothea Kieler first settled in the township of Paris in Grant County, where he worked at his trade in the town of Dickeyville, Wisconsin, and then went to Sac County, Iowa, where the Kielers bought a farm, cultivating it some two years circa 1876, until driven out by the grasshopper plague. Coming back to Wisconsin, the family lived in Jamestown Township in Grant County, and George Kieler followed his trade as a shoemaker for some years. The 1880 U.S. census has the George Kieler household in Jamestown Township consisting of George, age 35, shoemaker; his wife Doritha, age 31, keeping house; and their children, Catharine, age 8; George [William], age 6; John H. [Henry], age 4; and Lawrence, age 1.
In 1882 he purchased real estate, put up the first store building in what is now Kieler, and handled general merchandise in connection with his shoe trade for many years, becoming very prosperous. In 1883 he established the first post office of Kieler, giving it his family name, under the administration of President Chester A. Arthur, holding it until 1899. Mr. Kieler sold the store in 1899 and purchased the Jamestown Hotel at Louisburg, Wisconsin; he sold the hotel in October, 1900. He was on the Charter Board of Directors of the Jamestown Mutual Insurance Company in 1885 and served as a Director until 1892 and again from 1911 to 1913. He was also an agent for the company and served as company secretary for a brief time. Mr. Kieler was also a notary public. For many years he was the town treasurer and school clerk. In 1890 Mr. Kieler purchased farmland in Section 3 (later Martin Kieler's farm) and farmed for a number of years before retiring to the village in the fall of 1920.
In 1900, the U.S. census had the Kieler household consisting of George Kieler, age 54, occupation merchant; Dorotha, his wife, age 51, married 29 years, 11 children, 8 of whom survive; daughter Catherine M., age 28; son George W. [William], age 26, occupation buttermaker; son John H. [Henry], age 23, occupation carpenter; son Laurence, age 21, occupation farm laborer; son Karl F. [Charles], age 18; daughter Louisa, age 14; daughter Agatha, age 8; and daughter Matilda, age 5.
Mr. Kieler was a Democrat, and became one of the leading businessmen in the community. Mr. Kieler made his mark for honesty and uprightness. All the family belonged to the Catholic Church, and Mr. Kieler gave liberally to its support. He was a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin.
Golden Wedding Is Observed By Kieler Couple On July 2.

After the church services the party went to the Kieler farm where the day was spent. At the time the Kielers had 8 children and 19 grandchildren living.
