| Gertrude Gerken (1878-1951), daughter of Francis Xavier and Gertrude (Hinners) Gerken, was a second cousin to my grandfather, Ewald Gerken. Her father Xavier Gerken and my great-grandfather Henry Gerken were first cousins, and both lived at New Vienna, Iowa. Gertrude Gerken marries Bernard Boge.
Gertrude Gerken married Bernard John Boge on February 12, 1901 (undoubtedly at St. Boniface Church in New Vienna, Iowa). Bernard Boge, who was called "Barney," was born in 1869, son of Bernard and Christina (Lansing) Boge.
Barney and Gertude Boge had nine children: Alfred Boge, Cyril Boge, Clarissa Boge, Raymond Boge, Hilarius "Larry" Boge, Norbert Boge; Laurence Boge; Arthur "Isaac" Boge, and Eugene Boge.
Until at least 1914, the Boge family lived at New Vienna, Iowa, where most of their children were born; by 1920 they were living at Bankston, Iowa, where the last child Eugene was born; and circa 1934 the Boge family settled at Cassville, Wisconsin. At Cassville, Barney and Gertrude were members of St. Charles Church, and Gertrude was a member of the church's Rosary Society.

Gertrude Boge, 73, of Cassville, Wisconsin, died on Tuesday, October 23, 1951, at a hospital in Lancaster, Wisconsin. Services were at 9 a.m., Friday, October 26, from the Eckstein Funeral Home to St. Charles Church in Cassville. Burial was in the St. Boniface Church cemetery at New Vienna, Iowa.
Mrs. Boge was survived by her husband, Bernard; eight sons, Al Boge, Cyril Boge, and Larry Boge, of Dubuque, Ia., Ray Boge, of Neilsville, Wis., Norbert Boge, of Ionia, Ia., Laurence Boge and Eugene Boge, of Charles City, Ia., and Arthur Boge, of Stone City, Ia.; a daughter, Clarissa, Mrs. Peter Meyers, of Luxemburg, Ia.; 29 grandchildren; two brothers, John Gerken and Frank Gerken, of Arcadia, Iowa; and a sister, Mrs. Joe Schroeder of Ardway [Ordway?], Colo.
By 1956, Gertrude's widower, Barney Boge, had moved to Charles City, Iowa, where he had three sons living in the area..

Bernard "Barney" Boge, 94, of Charles City, Iowa, died Wednesday morning, December 4, 1963, at Charles City. Family and friends called after 7 p.m., Thursday, December 5, at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, December 7, at Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. Burial was in St. Boniface Cemetery in New Vienna, Iowa.
Mr. Boge was survived by a daughter, Mrs. Peter A. (Clarissa) Meyers, of Luxemburg, Ia.; eight sons, Alfred Boge, of Sageville, Ia., Cyril Boge, of Key West, Ia., Raymond Boge, of Marshfield, Wis., Larry Boge, of Spencer, Wis., Norbert Boge, of Ionia, Ia., Laurence Boge and Gene Boge, both of Charles City, Ia., and Arthur Boge, of Stone City, Ia.; 46 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 15, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in New Vienna, Iowa, with the Rev. Wilfred Johannes officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Arnie, Barney, Gordie, Jerry, Kenny and Roger Boge.

Mrs. Cyril F. (Isabelle) Boge, 49, of near Key West, Iowa, died at 11:30 a.m, Thursday, July 20, 1961, at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa, after a three-month illness. Family and friends called at the Hoffman Mortuary in Dubuque, where the members of St. Joseph Parish and the Rosary Society recited the Rosary at 8 p.m., Friday, July 21. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 22, at St. Joseph Church in Key West, with the Rev. John Sims officiating at the Requiem High Mass. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery at Key West.

Family and friends called from 3 to 8 p.m., Sunday, January 9, at Ed Siegert-Al Didesch Funeral Home in Dubuque, where there was a parish wake service at 7 p.m. Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 10, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Key West, and burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery at Key West.

Mr. Hantelmann was survived by his wife, Darlene; two daughters, Julie A. Hantlemann, of Chicago, Ill., and Joan A. (Peter) Timmerman, of Flower Mound, Texas; two grandsons, Adam and Luke Timmerman; two brothers, Robert Hantelmann and Richard (Kathy) Hantelmann, both of Dubuque, Ia.; and a sister, Donna Jean (Cliff) VanZile, of Scottsdale, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters-in-law, Beverly and Helen Hantelmann.

Patricia Madonna "Patty" Boge, 2, of Key West, Iowa, died Thursday, November 15, 1956, at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa, of injuries she received when she was hit by a car the previous evening. Family and friends called after 2 p.m., Friday, November 16, at the Hoffman Mortuary in Dubuque, from where services were held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, November 17, to St. Joseph's Church in Key West. A Mass of the Angels was offered by the Rev. Carl E. Kurt, who preached the sermon and officiated at the burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Four girl friends of the deceased acted as an honorary escort.

Memorial services, including a Catholic mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Taos was held on Friday, August 3, at 10 a.m., and a military funeral at the Santa Fe National Cemetery was held on Monday, August 6, at 10 a.m.

Robert Boge, 67, of Charles City, Iowa, died as a result of lung cancer on Tuesday, October 10, 2006, at Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. Memorial services were at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 17, at Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City, with the Rev. Carl Ries presiding. Inurnment was at a later date in St. Boniface Cemetery in Ionia, Iowa. Visitation was at the church an hour prior to services.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 30, at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, with burial in Sunnyside Memory Gardens at Charles City.

Mr. Boge was survived by eight sons, Lyle Boge, John Boge, Daniel Boge, Kenny Boge, and Gerald Boge, all of Anamosa, Ia., Robert Boge, of Wyoming, Ia., Marty Boge, of Fairview, Ia., and Raymond Boge, of Monticello, Ia.; three daughters, Janet Schmalfeldt and Mary Ann Fritz, both of Wyoming, Ia., and Kathleen Boge, of Anamosa, Ia.; eight grandchildren; seven brothers, Alfred Boge, of Sageville, Ia., Cyril Boge, of Dubuque, Ia., Raymond Boge, of Marshfield, Wis., Larry Boge, of Sheboygan, Wis., Norbert Boge, of Ionia, Ia., and Laurence Boge and Eugene Boge, both of Charles City, Ia.; and a sister, Clarissa Meyers, of Luxemburg, Ia.

George W. Schmalfeldt, Jr., 51, died on May 20, 1998.
Robert W. Boge, 45, died December 1, 1996.
Daniel Boge, 33, died March 12, 1992.
Eugene Martin Boge, 81, of Charles City, Iowa, died Monday, November 12, 2001, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. Family and friends called from 3 to 9 p.m., Thursday, November 15, at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City, where there was a parish vigil scripture wake service at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, November 16, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, with the Rev. Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial was in Beckwith Cemetery, rural Colwell, Iowa, where military rites were accorded by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.
Mr. Boge was survived by his wife, Eva, of Charles City, Ia.; three sons, Kenneth (Pam) Boge Sr., of Orchard, Ia., Gordon "George" (Janet) Boge, of Charles City, Ia., and Roger (Teresa) Boge, of Klemme, Ia.; three daughters, Linda (Bob) Dodd, of Klemme, Ia., Teresa Boge (Jerry Peters), of Floyd, Ia., and Norma Boge (Eldon Conyers), of Des Moines, Ia.; a daughter-in-law, Norma Boge, of Sacramento, Calif.; 21 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Barney; seven brothers; a sister; and a great-grandson.
Eva Boge, 81, of Charles City, Iowa, died Monday, January 31, 2005, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. Family and friends called from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, February 3, at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City, where there was a rosary at 4:30 p.m., and a vigil scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, February 4, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Burial was in Beckwith Cemetery, rural Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene; her parents; a son, Bernard "Barney," on Jan. 29, 1994; a grandson, Benjamin Boge; a brother, Duke Huckle; and a brother-in-law, Alfred Harms.
