Sources include, primarily, an account of the marriage and the obituaries for Clem and Thecla (Gerken) Bruggeman from the Dyersville Commercial; obituaries from the Dubuque Telegraph Herald; A Family Tree of the William Gerken Family (1986), updated by Sister Margaret Gerken; and W.T. "Bill" Murray's Bruggemann Family Rootsweb site. The (1st Communion?) image of Thecla Gerken was provided by Sheila Young, whose grandmother Maggie (Kerkhoff) Noethe was a first cousin to Thecla, and the image of Clem and Thecla Bruggeman was provided by Peggy Loucks, one of their granddaughters; Peggy believed it might have been the last photo taken of the couple as Clem died shortly afterwards.

I had the honor of visiting Thecla Bruggeman at her home in Dyersville on two separate occasions when I began doing research on the family history in the late 1970s. She was the first of only three of my grandfather Ewald Gerken's first cousins that I would meet, the others being her brother Oscar Gerken, whom I also visited at Dyersville, and Walter Steger, whom I visited, along with my uncle Ewald Gerken and his family, at Herman, Minnesota. My grandfather Ewald Gerken died before I was born, and so these three of the same generation would prove very helpful to me.

Thecla related some stories that may be found scattered throughout this Gerken family history. Here was a person who knew my great-grandparents, Henry and Anna Gerken, who both died in the 1910s, long before I was born, and she gave me the gift of their memorial cards. Thecla was also able to fill in the blanks by answering questions about various Gerken relations, which in turn pointed me in new directions of my research. Coincidentally, my wife and I were married on what would have been her and Clem's 70th wedding anniversary, on September 30, 1989.
