Joseph and Mary Anna (Gerken) Fritz

Mary Anna (Gerken) Fritz
Mary Anna Gerken was born on September 30, 1882, at New Vienna, Iowa, the second of nine children born to Henry and Anna (Winter) Gerken. Mary Anna's brothers and sisters were Louis, George, Hubert "Hub," Wilhelmina "Minnie," Irma, Alphonse, Ewald, and Zita. Mary grew into a tall woman, at close to six feet tall, with a big build. She had heavy, dark hair and a light complexion.

Marriage to Joseph Fritz.
Mary Gerken married Joseph Fritz, of New Vienna, Iowa, on January 24, 1905, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in New Vienna, with the Rev. F. W. Pape officiating. George Fritz and the bride's sister Wilhelmina Gerken were witnesses at the wedding. Joseph Fritz was born on September 5, 1869, to Leo and Maria Anna (Bockenstedt) Fritz at Dyersville, Iowa. Joe's father died in 1872, and his mother died the following year, leaving their children, including the four-year-old Joe, to be raised by relatives and friends in the Dyersville area.

Joe Fritz was somewhat tall and thin, with dark hair and a light complexion. Before his marriage he was living in New Vienna, Iowa, and he worked as a dray line man and hauled freight with a team of horses from the train to surrounding towns.

After their marriage, Joe and Mary Fritz, who farmed, briefly lived at New Vienna, Iowa, before moving to Adrian, Minnesota, circa 1906, where Mary had family. In 1919, the family moved to Cresco, Iowa, by train. They lived on a farm in Winneshiek County, two miles east of Cresco. Joe bought 157-160 acres (from Farnsworth?). Joseph milked cows, and raised pigs, chickens and crops.

Joe and Mary had nine children, Armella, Leo, Gilbert, Irma, Vincent, Ewald, Luella, Edna "Tina,", and Sylvester. Vince died at the age of six in 1920. Joe and Mary also raised their nephew John Fritz. John, who was called "Jack," was the son of Joe's half-brother, Anton "Tony" Fritz, and his wife Bella. Tony died circa 1907, and Bella suffered a nervous breakdown and was unable to care for their children. At the age of four, Jack was taken in by Joe and Mary. (A sister of Jack's was taken in by a brother of Joe's living in Nebraska.) Jack never talked much at first, so Mary would break clothes pins and would accuse him of breaking them so he would defend himself and this worked to open him up.

Mary Fritz dies.
Mary Anna (Gerken) Fritz, 42, of Cresco, Iowa, died on Monday, August 3, 1925, at Cresco. Mary was buried in Calvary Cemetery at Cresco. Mary was survived by her husband Joe; and children, Jack, age 22; Armella, age 19; Leo, age 18; Gilbert, age 15; Irma, age 13; Ewald, age 10; Luella, age 8; Edna "Tina," age 6; and Sylvester, age 4.

Mary was a large woman, which necessitated taking her out of her coffin and laying her on the floor. Then they could haul the coffin out of the home sideways, and afterwards carried her out and placed her once again in the coffin. Her hearse, a glass enclosed hearse with fringes, was pulled by a team of horses. Joe Fritz sold oats for 30 cents a bushel to pay for Mary Anna's funeral.

About three years after his wife's death, Joe traded the Cresco farm for twenty acres and a house in Dodge Center, Minnesota. Joe and his four youngest children, Ewald, Luella, Tina, and Sylvester, moved there with a team of horses; they lived a block from the hospital. Joe ran a truck farm and worked for other truck farmers. He also did a lot of gardening and odd jobs. Joe was a very hard worker. Theresa Keller, Ewald Fritz's daughter, relates that the four kids that accompanied Joe to Dodge Center worked weeding vegetables on the truck farm and this grueling experience was a topic of conversation at their dinner table, and that the only vegetables her dad Ewald would eat were peas, corn, beans, and potatoes, claiming that he weeded enough vegetables, when he was a kid, to last him a lifetime. Sy's wife Connie tells her that Sy also had an aversion to vegetables for the same reason, which has carried over to some of their children as well.

Theresa remembers her grandfather Joe as being a very gentle soft-spoken smiling old man. Growing up, she remembers Grandpa Joe, Aunt Tina, and Aunt Lu living kitty-corner from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. After church on Sunday mornings Grandpa Joe would take her home with him for a syrup sandwich. Grandpa Joe, Aunt Tina, and Aunt Luella really made them feel special as children. They would not let the kids get away with anything but were always available to help her parents with them.

Joseph Fritz dies.
Joseph Fritz, 78, died on Monday, December 15, 1947, of pneumonia, at University Hospitals in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was buried beside his wife in Calvary Cemetery at Cresco.

There he was co-captain of the football team in 1942, baseball captain in 1943, president of the "W" club, and intramural manager in 1946. He was the only child of Joe and Mary Anna to graduate from high school and college.
Sy joined the Blooming Prairie high school faculty in the fall of 1946 to take his first teaching position as industrial arts instructor and assistant coach for basketball and football. He became head basketball coach the following year and held that position until 1954, when he served as athletic director. His Blossom squads were champions or co-champions of the conference and earned sub-district honors during six of the seven years he was at the helm. Coach Fritz was highly regarded in coaching and educational circles as he was in the community.
Mr. Fritz possessed a fine talent for teaching and winning the respect of young people. He was also active in scouting and served as camp director of the Gamehaven Area Boy Scout camp, Camp Kahler, at Rochester, Minn., during the summers of 1952 and 1953.

    Sy Fritz Is Mourned.
An entire community mourned the death of Sylvester F. Fritz, highly respected popular member of the Blooming Prairie high school faculty, who died about eight o'clock, Tuesday morning, December 14, 1954, at his home in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota. He would have been 34 years old the next month. Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m., Friday, December 17, at St. Columbanus Church in Blooming Prairie, with Father H. Boecker officiating. Burial was in the Catholic section of Blooming Prairie cemetery.
Pallbearers were Hubert Srsen, Harold Morrison, Chas. Reps, Wayne Kannel, Frank Ressler, Jr., and Omer Folven. Honorary pallbearers were Maurice McFarlin, Dee Carey, Frank Betlach, Ed. M. Betlach, Douglas Delano, and Harold Stephen.
Death of the young former coach and teacher marked a tragedy which first touched him and his family and eventually was felt by the entire community when it was learned in early spring 1954 that he was a victim of cancer. Medical science could not arrest the disease and his condition grew progressively worse despite every effort of doctors and the prayers of a community where he was known for more than eight years with affection and esteem.
The community's heartfelt sympathy was extended to the bereaved family, which included his widow, Ellen "Connie," and four young daughters and a son, Jill, age 10; Patricia, age 7; Stephen, age 5; Bridget, age 3; and Maureen, age six months old.
From school children who knew him as the former star athlete and an understanding coach and teacher, to his fellow World War II veterans who took his misfortune as part of their own and worked many hours to help him move his family into a recently purchased home, to the elderly residents who knew and respected him as a competent educator and a devoted father, the community mourned the untimely death of "Sy," as he was affectionately known.
Coach Fritz's name will always hold an esteemed place in the history of the Blooming Prairie high school, and in the hearts of the legion of friends who deeply mourned the tragedy that struck the young man and his bereaved family.

Sources. Basic information on the Fritz family was provided by Luella Fritz during a visit to Cresco in 1978. Bruce and Theresa Keller (Theresa is Ewald and Marie Fritz's daughter) supplied much supplementary information and obituaries for John "Jack" Fritz, Edna (Fritz) Heimer, Gilbert Fritz, and Luella Fritz. The Kellers also forwarded much information that they received from Sandra (Ferrie) Sedam, a granddaughter of Irma (Fritz) Ollendieck. Online obituary sources are noted within the text. The photographs of Vincent Fritz, Ewald Fritz, and Joe Fritz belonged to Ewald Gerken, my grandfather; the picture of Mary was cropped from the Henry and Anna Gerken family photograph; and the picture of the grave I took during a stop in Cresco in 2002. Bruce and Theresa Keller supplied Joe and Mary Fritz's wedding photograph, the family photograph of 1947, and Mary Anna Fritz's memorial card.     T.L.
