| "Geschichte des Hauses Schnieders (Gehrken)" translates to "History of the House Schnieders (Gehrken)" and this is information prepared by Hegensdorf historian Heinz Lummer about the Gerken ancestral home there. In addition, you'll find information about Michael Ostwald's masonry work in Hegensdorf. Michael Ostwald was a brother-in-law to Herman Gerken, and he, his wife Anna, and some of their children would follow Herman Gerken from Germany to New Vienna, Iowa. My appreciation is extended to Tom Steichen (Gerken relation and a sixth cousin to me) who did the work of translating the German into English. | Erstmals wird das Haus, bzw. Seine Besitzer, 1566 erwähnt. Dort heißt es Cort Beck und ebenso Busch-Cord. (vielleicht der Nachfolger). | The house, and/or its owners, is mentioned for the first time in 1566. There it is named "Cort Becker" and, equally, "Busch Cord." (Perhaps the successor). |

19): Am 14ten September 1823 verlor ein heisiger Einwohner, nahmens Heinrich Gehrken vulgo Schnieders des morgens um 8 Uhr durch einen Fall vom Baume, wovon er Buch schlagen wollte (Bucheckern sammeln), plötzlich das Leben. |
In the Hegensdorf village chronicle in the year 1823 (on page 19) appears: On the 14th September 1823, a local inhabitant named Heinrich Gehrken, known as Schnieders, suddenly lost his life this morning at 8 o'clock through a fall from a beech tree from where he wanted to strike (to collect beech nuts). |

Als Eigentümer wird Michael Ostwald angegeben. | In the land register, which originates from the year 1830 and is found in the state archives in Detmold, 25 Morgen [a measure of land varying from .6 to .9 acres] property [land] belonged to the family. Michael Ostwald is named as the owner. |
| Michael Ostwald war gebürtig aus Wünnenberg. Seine Frau war vermutlich eine geborene Gehrken, deren Brüder vermutlich nach Amerika ausgewandert waren. In der Hegensdorfer Gemeindechronik heißt es nämlich im Jahre 1856: | Michael Ostwald was born in Wünnenberg. His wife was probable born a Gehrken, whose brothers emigrated, probably to America. In the year 1856 in the Hegensdorf community chronicle, he is named, namely: |
| Michael Ostwald, genannt Schnieders, ein Maurer aus Wünnenberg, hatte [ebenfalls] eine ziemlich starke Familie, lebte von seiner Arbeit und dem Ertrage seiner Grundstücke ruhig und zufrieden. Allerlei häusliche Leiden hatten ihn [zeimlich] heruntergebracht, so daß es ihm knapp wurde; allein er konnte hier immer noch [noch immerhin] fertig werden. | Michael Ostwald, called Schnieders, a mason [bricklayer] from Wünnenberg, had [also] a rather strong [large] family, lived from his work and the yield of his properties, calmly and contently. All kinds of domestic suffering [illnesses] had [rather] brought him down, so that for him it became tight [economically]; alone here he could still [nevertheless] become ruined [financially]. |

| Er war Maurermeister und Bauunternehmer. Viele öffentliche und private Bauten in vorigen Jahrhundert sind von ihm in Hegensdorf erstellt worden. | He was master mason and building contractor. Many public and private buildings in last century were constructed by him in Hegensdorf. |
