Herman Gerken (1819-1875)
Researched and written by |

| Our Gerken lineage has been traced back to the 1711 marriage of Heinrich and Clara Anna (Fumen) Gerken, and here you'll discover their descendants, as recorded in the Catholic church records of Hegensdorf in Germany, from 1711 to 1874. Heinrich and Clara Anna Gerken are great-great-grandparents to Herman Gerken, who brought our Gerken line to the United States, and my great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents. T.L. | ||||

He married Margaretha Kleine on January 22, 1828, in Hegensdorf. She was born about 1787 to Mr. and Mrs. Joannes Theodorus Kleine in Hegensdorf.
Margaretha (Kleine) Reimann died on February 7, 1831, in Hegensdorf, apparently of complications from childbirth: an unnamed child Reimann of Joannes Franciscus Theodorus and Margaretha (Kleine) Reimann died the same day in Hegensdorf.

Maria Angela Elisabeth Reimann was born on March 30, 1820, in Hegensdorf, Westfalen, Prussia, the last of eleven children born to Conrad and Anna Maria Gertrudus (Gerken) Reimann. Johann Franz and Maria Angela Elisabeth (Reimann) Naber had the following children, all born in Hegensdorf:
Johann Franz Naber died on November 27, 1853, in Hegensdorf.
Note. A 1995 history of New Vienna, Iowa, lists a John Naber, born November 17, 1845, at Hazendorf [sic. Hegensdorf] to Frank and Angela Reiman[n] Naber; John Naber came to America in 1868. He first settled at Guttenberg, Iowa. He married Susan Maiers at New Vienna on January 29, 1880. In 1897 they moved to western Iowa, where he died August 20, 1908. They had the following children: Valentine, Josephine, Leo, John, Anna, Richard, Eddie, William, Aloysius, and Susan.
The New Vienna history also lists a Frank Naber, born November 11, 1845, in Germany, who came with his brother John to America in 1868. He was engaged in the wagonmaking business with his brother at New Vienna. In 1870 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Kuhl. She died October 16, 1876. Frank Naber then married Mary Lammers, daughter of John and Katherina (Brandt) Lammers. Their children were Henry, of Springfield, Missouri; Catherine (Mrs. Bernard Diers), of Granville, Iowa; Bernard, of New Vienna; and Mary (Mrs. Barney Vaske). Frank Naber died on August 24, 1908.
Assuming these two are brothers, the dates of birth given in the New Vienna history are clearly wrong. The first entry makes clear that John was a son of Johann Franz and Maria Angela Elisabeth (Reimann) Naber of Hegensdorf. These two presumably are the above Adamus Naber and Joannes Naber. But it remains unclear exactly which was Adamus and which was Joannes.

Sources. The information compiled here traces the Gerken lineage from 1711 through 1874, the time period for which records from the Catholic Church in Hegensdorf are available on microfilm from the Church of Latter Day Saints, and appears here courtesy of fellow genealogist and Gerken relation Tom Steichen, who spent hours poring over the LDS microfilmed records and gleaning information about the Gerken family. Previously I had received some of this same information via an uncle from some distant German relatives. I sent Tom that information, which he was able to use for reference as he searched through the Hegensdorf church records. Discrepancies between that information and Tom's findings of the church records are noted. Most such discrepancies are minor and may be the result of church records versus town records or histories and the manner in which they were kept or written, the latter being less reliable for records of yesteryear. Because of this, Tom's transcription of the church records is given the most weight, and discrepancies are placed in parentheses with a question mark. The information from the Hegensdorf church records has been supplemented on this page at times with information from other sources, especially as concerns those from Hegensdorf who emigrated to the United States. These sources include obituaries, town histories, and emigration and immigration lists.
Tom Steichen originally contacted me because he had discovered that some of his ancestors, the Hermann Schaefer family, along with the Casper Schaefer family, had emigrated to the United States with the Michael Ostwald family, who were Herman Gerken's relatives (Herman Gerken being my great-great-grandfather). Steichen later learned that his own ancestry included Gerkens, and the connection between us was found, and it turned out that the Schaefers and Ostwalds were second cousins making the journey to America together. The Ostwalds settled at New Vienna, Iowa, where the Herman Gerken family had settled, and the Schaefers moved on to Stearns County, Minnesota, one of the places German Catholics were being encouraged to settle as they passed through New Vienna at the time. The last ancestors we hold in common are Franz and Anna Maria (Schmidt) Gerken, who were married in 1734 in Hegensdorf, and Tom and I, it turned out, are sixth cousins.
You are encouraged to contact Tom Steichen (e-mail address at right) if you have questions or further information to share about members of the Schaefer
family who emigrated to Stearns County, Minnesota, their descendants, or
any other offshoots of the Joanne Georg and Maria Elisabeth (Wördehoff) Gerken branch of the family tree. As always, continue to contact me (see below) with any information or questions you have about the Gerken family history.
