Blood, Sweat & Tears Under the Ground
SEPT. 21, 2005 19:30
It is said that most Americans searching their family history
will eventually find a Coal Miner in their tree. Well, I found my
wife's in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. This small city was home to the
Irish, Polish, Hungarian and Slovak people. It is still a melting pot today.
Here is a description of her grandfather by George Nelson.
Grandpa worked in the coal mines, working up to becoming a mine
mechanic. Though not big, he had a reputation of being tough and
belligerent and earned the title "Big Wrench", his assistant was
"Little Wrench" and neither of them would hesitate to use a wrench
to make a point with an unhappy miner if the situation demanded such
action.
