Red Island
It is composed of a brilliant formation of red sandstone which shows almost salmon colour in the opal light of the setting sun.'' The island's northeastern part supported a fishing population from the early 1800s, with local tradition identifying the first settlers as two Irishmen named McCarthy and Tobin, in 1811. The Census of 1836 records 83 residents, and for nearly a century numbers increased steadily. Lovell's 1871 directory listed Red Island as a prominent fishing settlement with ``the cod fishing... carried on in large boats'' (these boats were known as western boats and used primarily to fish the grounds off Cape St. Mary's) and serviced by a fortnightly packet boat. Family names of 1877 included Barry, Lamb, Ryan and Walsh. Other common names include Carroll, Corrigan, Doody, Dunphy, Kerrivan, Mulrooney, Norman, Reddy, Rose and Tobin. Residents who were children on Red Island around 1921, when the population peaked at 484, remember a life that combined fishing with subsistence farming and modest home industries. Names in this file:

MCCARTHY, BARRY, ROSE, BARRON, KELLY, ENNIS

Much of the information in this file was gleaned from "A Red Island Family Tree" by Brian Hennessey of Paramus, NJ. Brian did a great job on this book and it helped me get information on my family and started me in my quest for more facts and branches of the tree. When I was younger we always had people dropping in for a cup of tea. It wasn't till later that I learned where all these names originated. Visitors were always named Walsh, Rose, Lamb, Houlihan or Maher and they spoke with somewhat of an Irish brogue which turned out to be a Newfoundland accent.
