COVER STORY: RESEARCHING, REACHING, AND REACHING OUT
The three Rs of cultivating family on the Internet
by Sean P. Egen
(from Fall 2001)

Family. We can change our friends, colleagues, and acquaintances as often as our hairstyles—but family is forever. Like it or not, who you are today is due in large part to who your family was, or still is. So I looked at my assignment to write about using the Internet to research, locate, and stay in touch with family as not only an opportunity to learn about a subject I knew nothing about, but also a chance to perhaps better understand myself.

As a bachelor who lives 1200 miles from his family, occasionally screens calls from his mother (sorry, Mom), and only knows his ancestry as far back as his grandparents; the notion of using the Internet for family matters was pretty new to me. What I soon discovered, however, was just what a powerful tool the Internet is when it comes to tracking down your family and cultivating family relationships.
