Harry was in the Army during World War I and was stationed in Germany. He was a Private in Company A 305 Engineers. It was said that his father Crippen didn't shave his beard until Harry came home from the war. He bought a school bus after returning from the war and earned his living by transporting ladies from the Guilford area to the Dulaney's Frozen Foods in or near Tasley, Va.
