These are some quotes about Organ Tatum (b. 1793) from various
sources. These quotes were supplied by Ed Tatum.
From Woodward's Reminiscences of the Creek or Muscogee Indians (1859):
[These are the personal recollections of Gen. Thomas W. Woodward, adventurer and soldier,
who lived much of his life with the Indians. He knew personally the great-great grandsons
of Indians who had seen DeSoto on his march through Alabama in 1540, and was also well
acquainted with the Tatums]. "Organ Tatum and Ben Ward had the first fist-fight I
ever heard of in Montgomery county. Tatum bit off a piece of Ward's nose."
From Pioneer Days in Autauga County:
"Another name I would mention...is that of Col. Organ Tatum, who at the age of sixty
still lives amongst us, a fine specimen of health and comfort. The Colonel's children have
all left him and gone to the west, save one daughter [Sarah Albertine Miles]."
From the Autauga Citizen, July 7, 1859:
"Col. Organ Tatum, who was for many years a good and industrious citizen of the
county, resided till a few years ago, about eight miles South West of Prattville, when he
removed to Louisiana, and died a few months after his arrival at his new home.He had
a large family, and they all emigrated to the Western country. Berry Tatum, the only one
of his sons now remaining, resides about five miles West of Prattville. Recently a sad
misfortune has befallen him in the loss of his estimable
consort. That loss will be felt by him till death, that final quietus, closes the
scene."
