THE MARTIN STORY
My mother, Edna Martin, was one of 7 children born to Walter and Alice Mary (nee Waite) Martin. Six children lived to adulthood, one, Cyril Tom died at less than 1 year old in England in 1905. The family came to the United States in 1909 on the SS Laurentic, leaving Liverpool, England and arriving in Quebec, Canada on 11 June 1909. They then travelled by railroad to Salt Lake City, Utah where Walter worked on the railroad for most of his life.
The Martin ancestry is primarily in Wiltshire, England. Most were laborers, with no specific occupation. It doesn't appear that many were farmers. Branches from the Martin's are:
Freegard, Cope, Grubb.
The Waite ancestry is primarily in Gloucestershire, England. The Waite's and branches have occupations which included; baker, blacksmith, stonemason, but also did farming. In 1818 my 3rd great grandfather, Thomas Waite married Maria Iles. Most all the Iles family cousins moved to Australia in the 1850s.
Alice Mary Waite, my grandmother, was born 1874 to Thomas William Waite and Agnes Adora (Annie) Hinton. The Hintons were blacksmiths, carpenters and had a few various occupations including; beer making, inn management, postal delivery and turner. The Waite/Hinton branches include; Hicks, Browning, Creed, Holliday, and Jones.
