Notes from the Female Index of the
Allegheny County Marriage License Docket
In 1885, Allegheny County passed legislation requiring Marriage Licenses. The Index to the Marriage License Docket covers the years 1885-1925 and is organized using the Russell Index. The Russell Index sorts names by the first letter of the last name. Fortunately, Mc is treated as a separate letter. Within the last name, first names are alphabetical and then sorted by year. The Index is a typed document transcribed from the Marriage Licenses which were written in script. In some cases such as Emma McAdams and James, the typist simply could not interpret the original document. I looked at the script, and couldn't do any better, so James' last name remains questionable.
There was earlier legislation requiring Marriage Licenses in the City of Pittsburgh, however, Pittsburgh was smaller than it is today. Areas such as the North Side and Lawrenceville were originally separate cities that were later annexed into the City of Pittsburgh. Even with these limitations, the Index to the Marriage License Document has been a useful tool in genealogy research.
Women are listed by "name previous to marriage." In the case of a widow, Mary McAdams Marquis, for example, this would be the name of her deceased husband, not her maiden name. Mary reported on her marriage license that her first marriage was "dissolved by the death of her former husband." Women previously married are listed in bold, and the maiden name given in [brackets] when known.
