Notes for GERSHOM SKINNER:
From "The Early Families of Herkimer County," page 230:
"On June 21, 1782, just prior to the German Flats visit of Gen. George Washington (on June 30th), Gershom Skinner, Frederick Fox, Daniel Petrie Sr., and others were operating the only remaining grist mill in the area. According to the account in the Hatch Papers, an enemy raiding party of several hundred Tories and Indians from Canada attacked the mill at that time, after having bypassed the nearby settlement which they suspected to be too heavily manned based on the loud commotion arising from the marriage celebration of a Frederick Smith (this was probably an engagement celebration as the GF church record has Frederick Smith's marriage in Sep 1782). During the ensuing hand to hand fighting with the Indians in the dark, Gershom Skinner received several tomahawk wounds to the head but was able to escape into the waters of Furnace Creek. Genealogist Frank D. Deuel, in a letter published in the St. Johnsville Enterprise & News issue of 26 March 1930, relates how various prisoners were taken by the Tories at this Little Falls Mill Battle and that, similar to the experience of Andrew Piper, most were presumably held in Canada and exchanged about six months later (the patriots captured included Capt. Frederick Getman, Lawrence Harter, Christian Ittig, Jacob Petrie, Andrew Piper & Thomas Shoemaker)."More About GERSHOM SKINNER:
