bullet  General Notes:

These are my memories of my grandmother Mary Elizabeth (Shifflett) Talbott. By David Lee Talbot Sr. on January 13, 2003 her grandson. I was only 6 when she died so my recollections of her are limited. As I look back, I see her as a small woman hardened by the years of hard work. It must have been hard on her, not having the conveniences of the modern household items that were available during her day. The only running water that I know of, was that of cold water coming into the house with no sewer system. I know that she died from kidney failure. I would suspect it to be the same inherited disease that runs ramped thru the family, Polycystic Kidney Disease. Because there is no history of the disease on the Grandfather's side of the family, I suspect the genetic disorder started from the Shifflett line. The only recollection I have of her (And a painful one at that for me) was the time she was washing laundry on the back porch using and old ringer/washer washing machine. For those of you, that do not know what that is, I will explain. It was like a washing machine of today with the exception that it had a ringer on the top. The ringer looked like two rolling pins for making pies pushed together. The rollers were driven by metal gears. The purpose of the ringer was to ring out the water from the laundry (Hand fed) as it came out of the washing machine. As you might have guessed, the covers were off of the gears and I put my left index finger in the gears and ground it down about an 1/2 inched (To the bone). Being that we were poor all they could do was sew it back on (a doctor did it) the best they could.
