Research Notes:
From the book, "From Zigenfuss to Zickefoose 1739-1990" by Larry C. Zickefoose: About the year 1850, Henry Zickefoose acquired a tract of land consisting of 826 acres situated in Randolph County on the east bank of the right-hand fork of the Middle Fork River near where Hemlock Post Office is situated and about twenty-five miles from the town of Buckhannon. This land was acquired part by purchase from individuals and part from the state of West Virginia [then called the Commonwealth of Virginia]. The grant of patent for 179 acres of this land was dated 1 Jan 1851, and was signed by John B. Floyd, Esquire, Governor. This original grant is now in the possession of HENRY ARMSTEAD ZICKEFOOSE of Buckhannon. More than half of the 826 acres is still in the possession of the Zickefoose descendents. In moving from the Valley Head community to the Hemlock community, the people travelled west, crossed the left-hand fork of the Middle Fork River, climbed Schoolcraft Hill, travelled west by the head of Big Thicket and on to where the old Indian Trail crossed the river. The settlers transported their household effects on the backs of mules and horses. Most of the Zickefoose children were born before the family moved from Cheat Mountain to Hemlock. Two of the fourteen children died in infancy. Most of Henry Zickefoose's descendents live in Upshur and Randolph counties, West Virginia. Henry was 84 years old at the time of his death. Barbara and Henry had 82 grandchildren. Henry and Barbara sleep in the Mt. Olive Cemetery of Hemlock, West Virginia, and at the bottom of a small granite monument erected in their memory is inscribed the single word "PIONEERS."
